After six months of closed doors, Waukesha’s oldest Catholic church welcomed its congregation back Saturday, with hundreds of parishioners filling the pews for a bilingual Mass. The reopening marked a long-awaited homecoming for a church that had spent the first half of 2026 under renovation.
The 5 p.m. service was the first Mass held at St. Joseph Catholic Church since January, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. During the closure, Corpus Christi Parish directed worshippers to St. William, St. John Neumann and St. Mary, making Saturday’s return especially meaningful for regulars who had been rotating among the parish’s other sites.
The project was part of Corpus Christi Parish’s Renew and Restore effort, which estimated the work would cost more than $450,000. The parish said the renovation was needed to preserve the historic church while improving its safety, appearance and gathering spaces, with funding coming from donations, parish fundraising and building-and-grounds allocations.
A Half-Million-Dollar Reset For A Waukesha Landmark
The makeover included plaster repairs, new flooring, fresh paint and refinished pews, according to Corpus Christi Parish. Parishioners also got a clearer view of a stained-glass window after part of a loft wall was lowered, while the sanctuary ceiling was painted blue and topped with stars representing heaven and St. Joseph.
FOX6 News Milwaukee reported that the church had gone roughly four decades without a major update before the parish committed to the top-to-bottom restoration. Volunteers even helped move and sand the old pews, which had been showing their age along with the church’s creaky floors, peeling walls and cracked surfaces.
Spanish Worship Remains Central To St. Joseph’s Identity
St. Joseph was the first church in Corpus Christi Parish to offer Spanish-language Masses, and it continues to host bilingual services for holidays and special occasions. The church also provides headsets that translate Spanish Masses for English-speaking attendees, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
For parishioners, the restored space was both familiar and noticeably renewed. Spanish-speaking worshipper Mireyda Tejeda said finding Mass in her own language made her feel at home, while Carol Reske described the reopened church as “open, bright and beautiful,” the newspaper reported.
A Church With Roots Stretching Back Nearly 185 Years
St. Joseph’s history in Waukesha reaches back to 1842, when Mass was celebrated in a log house on East Avenue and Main Street. The present Gothic-style stone church was built between 1888 and 1890, and the parish now calls it the “Church of Second Chances,” according to Corpus Christi Parish’s history.
Saturday’s bilingual Mass restored more than a worship schedule; it brought a multilingual congregation back into one of Waukesha’s most recognizable historic interiors. After months of temporary arrangements, St. Joseph is once again serving as a shared home for the Corpus Christi community.
