An early-morning fire tore through a two-story Weeki Wachee home today and pushed flames into a neighboring house, but everyone inside the primary residence escaped safely. The adjacent property was empty, turning a potentially far more dangerous scene into a close call for residents and firefighters.
Hernando County Fire Rescue units arrived just after 3:30 a.m. in the 7000 block of Coventry Court, where crews found heavy fire involvement across the two-story home, according to Tampa Free Press.
Crews Tackled The Neighboring Home First
Because the flames were extending toward the second structure, firefighters extinguished the neighboring house first to keep the fire from spreading farther. Crews then knocked down the main blaze after spending roughly 45 minutes at the scene.
No occupants or firefighters were reported injured. The neighboring structure was unoccupied when the fire reached it, and the cause remains under investigation.
County Fire Officials Stress Smoke Alarm Readiness
Hernando County’s Fire Rescue department advises residents to test smoke alarms monthly and replace alarms 10 years after their manufacture date. Those routine checks can matter most when a fire starts overnight and spreads before everyone is fully awake.
