Winter Park's Conduit venue turns into a technical death metal proving ground this Friday, August 14, when Yonkers, New York veterans Malignancy headline a four-band bill alongside Connecticut's Anal Stabwound, Houston goregrind act mysteryxmeat, and Tampa's Virulence. Doors open with a 7 p.m. start time, and tickets run $20. The show packs together four distinct regional strains of extreme metal onto one stage at 6700 Aloma Ave.
Malignancy has been grinding away at technical death metal since vocalist Danny Nelson and guitarist Javier Velez originally formed the band in February 1992, with guitarist Ron Kachnic joining two years later to round out the songwriting core that has held together for three decades, according to AllMusic. As Orlando Weekly describes it, the band fuses grindcore roots with guitar heroics, a combination that has defined their sound since the New York death metal scene's earlier years. In 2019, the band revisited that history directly, re-recording and re-releasing their 1999 debut album “Intrauterine Cannibalism” to show fans how far their sound had traveled from grindcore-influenced brutality toward modern technical precision, per AllMusic.
A New Album After a 12-Year Wait
The Friday date arrives as Malignancy tours behind “...Discontinued,” released on Willowtip Records in June 2024 as the band's fifth full-length and its first collection of new original material in 12 years, following 2012's “Eugenics,” according to Last Rites. The studio recording features guest bass work from Jacob Schmidt of German technical death metal band Defeated Sanity alongside longtime extreme metal drummer Mike Heller, The Razor's Edge reports. Tampa's Veteran Death Metal Roots
Virulence brings the Florida contingent to the bill, playing a mix of death, black, and thrash metal rooted in Tampa's extreme music scene. The band was formed in November 2020 by Florida death metal veterans including vocalist/guitarist Chris Defaut and drummer Mike Petrak, both of whom previously played in regional acts such as Divine Empire, Infernaeon, and Amon, according to dshowmusic.com. Their five-track debut EP, “Necrosis,” arrived in November 2022 and was mixed and mastered by Canadian extreme metal producer Christian Donaldson of Cryptopsy, the same outlet notes.
Conduit's Role in Central Florida's Metal Circuit
The venue hosting Friday's show has its own history in Central Florida's heavy music scene. Conduit opened in January 2023 at 6700 Aloma Ave in Winter Park, replacing the long-running metal venue The Haven Lounge, under a joint partnership between Endoxa Booking promoter Pete Olen, Will's Pub owner Will Walker, and The Orpheum owner Jerry Dufrain, according to Orlando Weekly. Winter Park and Orlando's underground metal circuit leans heavily on independent venues like Conduit, Will's Pub, and The Abbey to keep national and regional extreme metal tours routing through Central Florida, the outlet reports. That kind of dedicated venue infrastructure is often what determines whether niche subgenres like technical death metal and goregrind can sustain touring routes through the region at all.
