Wisconsin Dog Food Maker Recalls 5,825 Cases Over Metal Fragments in Cans

A Wisconsin pet food maker is telling dog owners across the U.S. and Canada to stop feeding their pets certain canned products right now, after customers complained of finding metal fragments inside. Fromm Family Foods announced that more than 5,000 cases of its wet canned dog food are being recalled nationwide, with the company warning that even small pieces of metal can seriously injure a dog's mouth or digestive tract.

According to the FDA's recall notice, published August 21, the affected products total 5,825 cases split between two varieties: 3,852 cases of Fromm Turkey Pâté, sold in 12.2-ounce cans under UPC 072705118700, and 1,973 cases of Fromm Diner Classics Milo's Meatloaf Pâté, sold in 12.5-ounce cans under UPC 072705132324. Both share the lot prefix EP2A3306 and carry a best-by date of March 2029, according to the same filing. As NBC Chicago reports, the recalled cans were distributed to neighborhood pet stores and online outlets across the U.S. and Canada.

Fromm says the recall was triggered after it received complaints of metal contamination in the affected cans, and the company has identified the error behind the issue, per the FDA notice. No illnesses have been reported so far, the filing states. Still, the FDA is warning that metal of any size, especially sharp pieces, can cause serious health issues in dogs, including lacerations in the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, as well as gastrointestinal upset, partial blockage, and risk of intestinal obstruction if consumed in large amounts.

Warning Signs Pet Owners Should Watch For

Symptoms of possible metal ingestion include choking, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, or stomach discomfort, according to the recall notice. Dog owners are urged to contact a veterinarian if their dogs consumed the affected product and are showing any of those symptoms. Anyone who purchased the recalled cans should return them to the retailer where they were bought, and the recall notice is direct on the immediate step: consumers should stop feeding the product to their dogs.

Fromm has opened a dedicated consumer support line at 1-800-325-6331, staffed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time, for pet owners seeking guidance or refund details, according to the FDA filing. The company says it has put corrective actions in place to prevent metal contamination from happening again, though the notice does not detail how the metal entered the canning process in the first place.

A Second Contamination Recall in Eight Months

Fromm Family Foods is based in Wisconsin, where the company produces its canned wet dog food at a company-owned cannery in Eden, separate from the dry food, treat, and frozen manufacturing facilities it operates in Mequon and Columbus. This is not the company's first brush with foreign-material contamination in recent memory. Just eight months earlier, on December 3, 2025, Fromm voluntarily recalled 300 cases of its Bonnihill Farms BeefiBowls Beef Recipe frozen dog food over potential plastic contamination, an incident also triggered by customer complaints without reported animal injuries.

Founded in 1904 and still based in Mequon, Fromm is a fifth-generation family-owned pet food company with deep roots in the industry — the business helped develop the first canine distemper vaccine in the 1930s and launched its first complete dry dog food in 1949, according to Petful. The brand also recalled roughly 5,500 cases of its Four-Star Shredded Entrée canned dog food back in October 2021 over potentially elevated vitamin D levels, which can lead to kidney dysfunction in dogs if consumed in excess.

Part of a Broader Pattern in Pet Food Safety

Federal rules under the Food Safety Modernization Act require animal food manufacturers to maintain hazard analyses and written preventive controls, such as metal detectors or x-ray equipment, to catch physical hazards that arise from machinery wear or metal-to-metal contact, according to FDA regulations. Those same rules call for routine equipment maintenance and inspections. Whether federal inspectors will conduct a follow-up audit of the Eden facility remains unclear.

The Fromm recall lands amid a string of other pet food safety actions this year. On August 17, Oma's Pride, doing business as Miller Foods, issued a voluntary recall of raw frozen dog food over Salmonella contamination, per the FDA's recall database. Earlier in the summer, on July 2, Mars Petcare US recalled Pedigree canned wet dog food due to potential plastic contamination, underscoring that foreign material intrusion remains a recurring challenge across the canned pet food industry.
