For the second straight year, fans showed up for the football — and for the loud, unmistakably local sports personality who knows how to turn a practice field into an event.
Fans packed the stands and surrounding hillsides, while McAfee signed autographs and took selfies for nearly half an hour before the broadcast, according to CBS Pittsburgh. The crowd included Steelers loyalists, longtime followers of the show and at least one fan who said Monday marked his fourth time seeing McAfee perform live.
A Familiar Stop on the Steelers Camp Calendar
The appearance came on a particularly anticipated day at camp, with the Steelers putting on pads for the first time this summer. The team’s official schedule identifies Saint Vincent College as the site of its 2026 camp and notes that Monday’s practice was set for the start of the padded portion of preparations, according to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
McAfee’s return also reinforces how much the former Colts punter has become part of the region’s sports-media ecosystem. ESPN’s official biography describes him as the host of the nationally syndicated Pat McAfee Show and a regular contributor across the network’s football programming, including ESPN’s football coverage.
The Hometown Connection Is Part of the Appeal
McAfee grew up in Plum, played football at West Virginia University and spent eight seasons with Indianapolis before building his post-playing career around broadcasting and entertainment. That local connection has also shown up in tangible ways: Daktronics reported that his We’re All Mustangs Here foundation helped bring new video displays and scoreboards to Plum Senior High School, his alma mater, in 2025.
That background was plainly part of Monday’s appeal, with fans citing McAfee’s Pittsburgh identity, Steelers allegiance and willingness to speak his mind. As CBS Pittsburgh reported, one fan summed up the attraction by calling McAfee a “Yinzer” whose accent is part of the charm.
