A 14-year-old boy was shot at Tidwell Park in northeast Houston Tuesday evening and taken to a hospital in stable condition, according to police. Three possible suspects were detained as officers swarmed the park near the intersection of Tidwell Road and Homestead Road.
Houston Police officers responded to the scene at 9700 Spaulding Street around 7 p.m., arriving to find the teen suffering from a gunshot wound, according to Click2Houston. Northeast Patrol and Patrol Support units pinpointed the shooting to the park's location near two major northeast Houston thoroughfares, according to KHOU 11. Houston police posted an update on the shooting on X, confirming the three detentions and the boy's condition.
A Park With a Recent History of Gunfire
Tidwell Park was also the site of a shooting less than a year earlier, in October 2025, when a man in his early 30s was critically wounded while resting on a park bench late at night. That victim managed to call for help but could not give police a description of the shooter, per a report from Click2Houston at the time. The proximity of two serious shootings at the same park within roughly eleven months underscores a pattern of violence that has persisted despite the site's public status.
The park sits within Houston City Council District B, where officials approved grant funding applications earlier this year to build a $15 million aquatic facility with a heated leisure pool and splash pad, as reported by the Houston Defender. District B is represented by Council Member Tarsha Jackson. Portions of Tidwell Park along Spaulding Street were also designated a protected municipal nature preserve back in July 2022, under a city ordinance covering native wildlife habitats and tree canopy across 26 parks citywide.
Part of a Wider Pattern of Youth Gun Violence
Tuesday's shooting adds to a string of park-related gun violence involving young people across Houston this year. In mid-February, seven teenagers were shot across the city within a single week, including two teens wounded during a basketball game dispute at Zollie Scales Park, according to ABC13 Houston. Under Texas Penal Code § 46.02, carrying a handgun outside one's home or vehicle is unlawful for anyone under 21, a Class A misdemeanor unless specific exceptions apply, according to FindLaw's summary of the statute. The Houston Police Department's Juvenile Division operates around the clock handling cases involving suspects ages 10 through 16, per the City of Houston, though it remains unclear whether any of the three individuals detained at Tidwell Park are juveniles or whether charges will be filed in adult or juvenile court.

The area surrounding Tidwell Park, in the 77016 ZIP code covering the Calgary Woods and Scenic Woods neighborhoods, has a median home value of around $125,000 and a median age of 36.8, according to Texas Ally Real Estate Group. Local leaders launched the BeSuccessful Initiative in District B back in September 2022, deploying job coordinators and youth mentors to combat high youth crime and poverty rates in northeast Houston, per FOX 26 Houston.
The shooting also follows other recent violent cases involving Houston teens.
