A 33-year-old woman was shot Tuesday morning on Cleveland's West Side and was pronounced dead at MetroHealth Medical Center. The shooting happened around 10 a.m. in the 3100 block of West 61st Street, in a residential stretch of the city's Stockyards neighborhood.
Cleveland EMS transported Veronica Miller to MetroHealth Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The station reached out to Cleveland police for additional information but had not received further details on a suspect, a motive, or the victim's condition at the time of its report. As of Tuesday afternoon, the case remained a developing story with few confirmed details beyond the time, location, and the severity of the woman's injuries.
A Mixed Picture on Cleveland Violence
The Stockyards shooting lands amid a complicated year for violent crime data in Cleveland. Homicides in the city held steady through the first half of 2026, with 48 recorded through June — identical to the 48 tallied over the same stretch in 2025, according to Axios Cleveland. That same report found rape and robbery counts declined slightly during that period while aggravated assaults ticked up.
The trend line looked different earlier in the year. Cleveland homicides jumped from 19 to 25 in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, an increase of more than 30%, Axios Cleveland reported separately. Aggravated assaults also rose by more than 20% in that same first-quarter comparison, even as rapes and robberies fell by around 20%.
Longer-Term Trend Still Pointing Down
Zooming out, the broader trajectory for Cleveland has been improvement. The city recorded 118 homicides in 2025, a decrease of nearly 8% from 128 the year before, according to cleveland.com. Cuyahoga County as a whole recorded 166 homicides in 2025, down nearly 7% from 178 in 2024, and the county also saw a 28% drop in rape cases and a 15% decrease in felony assaults last year, per that same report.
Tuesday's shooting also follows other recent gun violence in the city. On September 4, a Cleveland man identified as Jaylan Craig was fatally shot on Forest Avenue near East 120th Street in the Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood, cleveland.com reported. Police in that case arrested a 19-year-old suspect after a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting crashed during a pursuit, and investigators recovered two firearms, including one that had previously been reported stolen.
