A 4-year-old child died Thursday after wandering into the path of a tractor-trailer on State Route 41 in Highland Township, Chester County, in a crash that Pennsylvania State Police say happened around 12:25 p.m. The child had been walking in a grassy area along the roadway's southbound shoulder before crossing both lanes of traffic, directly into the truck's path.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, the crash took place on Route 41 north of Highland Road, in the section of Chester County where the highway cuts through Highland Township. Pennsylvania State Police reported that the child entered the roadway from the grassy shoulder, crossed the southbound lane, and then entered the northbound lane, where a tractor-trailer traveling north on Route 41 struck the child.
Emergency responders transported the child to Lancaster General Hospital, where the child died shortly after arriving, per the same report. State police have not said whether an adult was with the child at the time of the crash, leaving a central question about the moments leading up to the collision unanswered for now.
