A 51-year-old man died Wednesday morning after his pickup truck collided with an SUV and a passenger car on South Main Street. Police have identified him as Jonathan Michael Morgan and say he was the sole fatality in the three-vehicle wreck.
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday along South Main Street between Long Meadow Drive and Peeler Road, according to WSOC-TV, which reported that the collision involved Morgan's pickup, an SUV, and a four-door passenger car.
Multiple occupants of the SUV and the passenger car were injured and had to be taken to a hospital for treatment, according to the Salisbury Post. Police have not disclosed how many people were hurt or detailed the extent of their injuries.
Investigators Seek Witnesses as Cause Remains Unclear
The Salisbury Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is leading the investigation and is asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Master Police Officer M. Benjamin at 704-638-5333. Officials have not yet said what caused the three vehicles to collide, and no determination of fault has been announced.
The crash adds to a troubling pattern along the same roadway. In February, a fatal hit-and-run crash struck four motorcycles at South Main Street and Airport Road, killing 54-year-old rider Jody Holloman; police later identified a suspect who had fled the scene on foot, according to the Salisbury Police Department. That case also involved a fatal crash.
Wednesday's crash follows another serious Rowan County traffic incident earlier this month, when a pedestrian was struck on Interstate 85 North near China Grove after an argument, and a second vehicle then rear-ended a responding fire engine, as Hoodline previously reported. Together, the incidents point to a stretch of county roadways where emergency responders and commuters alike face heightened risk.
Traffic Safety Factors
The Deuterman Law Group has reported that distracted driving factored into about 17% of crashes.
Police have not said whether speed, distraction, or another factor played a role in Wednesday's crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
