Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 65-year-old man near 62nd and Gratz Streets in Philadelphia's Ogontz neighborhood early Friday, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. Police said the man was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene at about 6:13 a.m. Officers found a single spent shell casing near him, but authorities have not released his identity or said what led to the shooting.
Officers were called to the 6300 block of North Gratz Street around 6 a.m. Friday after receiving a report that a man had been shot, NBC10 Philadelphia reported. Philadelphia Police Department Chief Inspector Scott Small said officers responded to the report but did not provide information about a suspect or a possible motive, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The area is covered by the 35th Police District, which also includes Logan, Fern Rock and parts of West Oak Lane, according to a prior Hoodline report.
A Neighborhood Already on Edge
Friday's shooting follows two other fatal incidents reported in Ogontz since mid-August. On August 14, a 70-year-old auto body shop owner was fatally shot outside his business on the 5900 block of Ogontz Avenue, and one person was taken into custody at the scene, according to the Northeast Times. On August 30, two women were found dead inside a rowhouse on the 1600 block of Conlyn Street after police declared a barricade situation upon hearing gunshots inside. The incident was investigated as an apparent murder-suicide, per The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The corridor near 62nd and Gratz has seen severe violence before. In March 2024, two gunmen opened fire at a bus stop on the 6200 block of Ogontz Avenue, killing a 17-year-old boy and injuring four bystanders near the intersection with Gratz Street, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Philadelphia recorded 220 homicides in 2025, according to WHYY, compared with 562 in 2021.
Hoodline also reported that Philadelphia's homicide clearance rate reached 82% in 2025, up from 45% in 2016, while nonfatal-shooting clearances rose above 40%. The report attributed the gains to lighter caseloads and enhanced forensic technology.
