Beyond the Bagel, a fixture on Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair for more than three decades, will close its doors Sunday. Owner Tina Ganan, 55, says insufficient income, high rents and rising costs left her with no way forward, and that she plans to file for bankruptcy.
Ganan spent 10 years working at the shop before becoming its owner, and she has run Beyond the Bagel for 20 years, according to Montclair Local. She tried to negotiate with her landlord to keep the shop open but could not reach an agreement, the outlet reports. Property tax records list the landlord as Pech Realty Co LLC, with an address in Ridgewood.
The shop has served bagels, breakfast and a range of other food over the decades, building a customer base that spans multiple generations of Montclair residents, per the same account. Ganan said she will miss the community the shop built over the years.
A Business District Without a Safety Net
Unlike downtown Montclair, Upper Montclair has no designated Business Improvement District to offer coordinated marketing or merchant support, according to The Montclair Pod. That leaves independent retailers along Bellevue Avenue to navigate rising overhead largely on their own.
Commercial property tax bills in the corridor are steep. PropertyShark identifies a nearby commercial parcel at 213 Bellevue Ave. Rent pressures remain a challenge for local businesses like Ganan.
Regional Costs Squeeze Small Businesses
The pressure facing Beyond the Bagel reflects a broader regional trend. In the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro area, the Consumer Price Index for items excluding food and energy rose 4.0% year-over-year in July 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The broader economic backdrop is part of the context for the pressure facing small businesses.
For shops like Beyond the Bagel, fixed costs kept climbing, adding to the pressure on the business.
A Crowded Bagel Market
Beyond the Bagel's closure comes as Montclair's bagel scene grows more competitive. Regional chain Bagel Supreme opened its 13th location, dubbed Bagel Supreme Go, inside Lackawanna Station at 1 Lackawanna Plaza in June, bringing a build-your-own cream cheese concept to town, according to The Montclair Girl. The local bagel market has grown more competitive.
Independent shops still hold on elsewhere in town. Hot Bagels Abroad at 150 Valley Road has operated in Montclair since 1992, and Sunrise Bagels is located at 29 Watchung Plaza in Montclair, but it does not open daily at 5 a.m.; it opens at 6 a.m. on Sundays. Beyond the Bagel's exit leaves Bellevue Avenue without the independent bagel shop that anchored the block for generations.
