Construction crews are preparing to move into the former Associated Bank building at 208 Steele Street in Algoma, Wisconsin, where the city plans to convert the space into a new City Hall and police station. Bayland Buildings has been awarded the renovation contract, and the work marks the next phase of a municipal facilities overhaul that has been years in the making.
According to Door County Daily News, Bayland Buildings announced it was awarded the contract to renovate the former bank building into Algoma's new City Hall and police station. The Common Council voted in October 2024 to acquire the property for $200,000, as reported by the Kewaunee County Star News.
Renovation Scope Covers More Than Just Office Space
The renovation contract includes upgrades to the HVAC and electrical systems inside the building, per the station's report. City Administrator Matt Murphy said the former bank building is in great shape but still requires changes to fit the needs of city government and its police department. Crews are moving into the former Associated Bank building as work at the city's new fire station finishes up, the outlet notes.
That fire station timeline traces back to October 2025, when Bayland Buildings broke ground on a separate $3.9 million, 19,100-square-foot Fire and Rescue facility on Sunset Avenue in Algoma's industrial park, according to the Kewaunee County Star News. The city had scheduled formal public bid openings for June 15, 2026, to evaluate contractor proposals for both the Steele Street conversion and utility upgrades at the public library, per the City of Algoma.
Library Stays Put Despite Earlier Relocation Talk
The Algoma Public Library will remain in its current space because of a donor's generosity, according to Door County Daily News. City officials had originally considered relocating the library into the 208 Steele Street building, but that plan was abandoned. The renovation contract instead includes new utility services for the existing library building.
City Hall and the Algoma Police Department currently operate out of the property slated for sale, while the library will remain in its current space. Once city hall and police operations move into the renovated bank building, the current property housing those functions will be put on the market, per Door County Daily News.
Downtown Fire Station Also Up for Redevelopment
The moves are part of a broader push by Algoma to shed surplus municipal real estate. In August 2026, the city issued a Request for Proposals seeking private developers to acquire and redevelop the former 6,400-square-foot Fire Rescue station at 401 Third Street in downtown Algoma, according to the City of Algoma. The effort reflects a priority on returning downtown commercial property to the tax roll rather than leaving it vacant.
The Algoma Police Department is led by Chief Tyler Tuttle. Tuttle's department will be among those relocating once renovations at the Steele Street site are complete.
A Pivot From an Earlier, Bigger Plan
Algoma previously considered a referendum and a joint public-safety building. The city is also pursuing separate fire-station and bank-building projects.
