A 29-year-old man was shot and killed in Allerton shortly before 9:20 p.m. on Saturday night, struck twice in the chest near Cruger Avenue and Magenta Street before he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died. Investigators are now searching for two men who fled the scene on a scooter, according to police.
Police say the victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest and was transported to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to News12 Bronx. As of Saturday night, his identity had not been released. The two men suspected of fleeing on the scooter remain unidentified, and no further details about them have been made public.
The shooting is the latest in a string of gun violence to hit the small Allerton neighborhood this year. In February, a man was fatally shot outside 660 Thwaites Place and later identified as 26-year-old Amir Ahmad, who was taken to NYC Health+ Hospitals/Jacobi, where he died, per a report from bronx.news12.com. The three people arrested in the February 13, 2026, fatal shooting of Amir Ahmad outside 660 Thwaites Place in Allerton were arrested on February 23, 2026, according to Norwood News, charging 18-year-olds Wanderlin Mateo and Darlin Sanchez along with 23-year-old Angelic Encarnacion with murder, manslaughter, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. All three are presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
A Neighborhood With a Recent History of Shootings
A separate shooting in the area left 24-year-old Jamari Henry dead of multiple gunshot wounds and wounded four other men in their 20s, according to CBS News New York. Five persons of interest were later taken into custody in that case, the outlet reported.
The pattern of gunmen using scooters to approach or flee crime scenes has also shown up elsewhere in the Bronx. In Fordham Heights, two men on scooters opened fire on six men, with police saying nine rounds were fired and no arrests made at the time the report was published, according to FOX 5 New York.
Citywide Numbers Show a Mixed Picture
Citywide, shootings are down almost 3% compared with last year, but August shootings rose 4% compared with August 2025, per NYPD figures cited by CBS News New York. In response to the violence, Mayor Eric Adams said the NYPD would send an additional 1,000 officers into the Bronx, according to the same report.
