Apex Police Department is gearing up for its 10th Annual A Day Behind (handle) Bars motorcycle ride, a charity run for Special Olympics North Carolina.
The ride is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a decades-long partnership between police agencies and Special Olympics athletes, according to a post from the Apex Police Department on Facebook. The event is a Special Olympics North Carolina campaign.
A Fundraising Legacy Two Decades in the Making
This is not Apex PD's first rodeo when it comes to raising money for Special Olympics athletes. Over more than two decades of supporting the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the department has raised over $315,000 for Special Olympics North Carolina, according to the Town of Apex.
The motorcycle leg of the fundraiser supports Special Olympics North Carolina.
Part of a Statewide Movement
The Law Enforcement Torch Run has grown into a global movement involving more than 110,000 officers who have raised over $1.1 billion worldwide, according to Special Olympics North Carolina. In North Carolina, nearly 2,000 officers participate in the state's Torch Run each year, generating more than $1 million annually and cumulative totals exceeding $37 million.
Special Olympics North Carolina engages nearly 53,000 athletes and Unified partners through 20 Olympic-style sports, according to Cause IQ. Wake County hosts local events supporting Special Olympics North Carolina.
Apex Ride Joins a Countywide Network of Police Fundraisers
Apex's motorcycle ride is one piece of a broader web of Wake County law enforcement fundraising for Special Olympics athletes. The Wake Forest Police Department recently brought a Humvee and a police boat to its own Touch-A-Truck event supporting the cause, an effort Hoodline previously covered. The Wake County Sheriff's Office has also hosted its Race for the Checkered Flag 5K, another local event under the Law Enforcement Torch Run umbrella.
