A motorcyclist riding a Harley-Davidson was airlifted to a trauma center after crashing into the back of a UTV trailer on Deep Creek Road near Centennial Street in Apple Valley Saturday night. The rider was thrown from the motorcycle and landed on top of the UTV itself, according to CHP radio traffic, while the motorcycle came to rest on the trailer.
The crash was reported at approximately 8:47 p.m. Saturday, according to Victor Valley News Group, which first reported the collision. The Apple Valley Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol were both dispatched to the scene, where fire personnel found the rider alert and breathing atop the UTV. Details regarding the rider's injuries were not immediately available.
The rider was transported from the crash scene aboard a Mercy Air helicopter and flown to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by CHP's Victorville station, which handles traffic enforcement and accident investigations across unincorporated San Bernardino County roadways in the High Desert, per the Yaghmai Law Firm.
Why a Helicopter Was Needed
Loma Linda University Medical Center is an ACS-verified Level I adult regional trauma center in or serving San Bernardino County, as is Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, according to Loma Linda University Health, which notes the hospital maintains four dedicated adult trauma bays and treats up to 3,000 of the region's most critical trauma patients annually. Because the High Desert lacks a trauma center of its own, air medical providers like Mercy Air routinely fly critically injured patients roughly 40 miles south across the Cajon Pass to reach it, as CBS Los Angeles has reported.
The initial response fell to the Apple Valley Fire Protection District, which covers 206 square miles across the High Desert and staffs five full-time paramedic stations serving more than 90,000 residents, according to the district's own account of its operations. Deep Creek Road itself is a well-traveled corridor connecting rural residential neighborhoods to public land access routes, a layout that regularly puts street motorcycles in close proximity to trucks hauling off-highway vehicles and trailers.
Open Questions in the Investigation
Investigators have not yet said what speed the motorcycle was traveling or how closely it was following the UTV trailer before impact. California Vehicle Code Section 21703 bars drivers from following another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent given speed, traffic, and road conditions, a standard often examined in rear-end motorcycle collisions.
Also unresolved is whether the trailer's rear lighting met state requirements for nighttime visibility. California Vehicle Code Section 24600 requires trailers operating after dark to be equipped with functioning red taillamps visible from 1,000 feet to the rear, a factor investigators frequently weigh in nighttime rear-impact crashes.
A Familiar and Deadly Pattern
San Bernardino County recorded 48 motorcyclist fatalities in 2023, ranking fourth among California's counties behind Los Angeles, San Diego and Riverside counties, according to data compiled by the Wilshire Law Firm. Statewide, California recorded 583 motorcyclist deaths in 2023, a 10.2% drop from 649 the year before, though motorcyclists still accounted for roughly 14% of all traffic fatalities in the state, per the California Office of Traffic Safety. Unsafe speed remains the leading factor in fatal and serious-injury motorcycle crashes statewide, cited in 28.2% of such collisions analyzed by UC Berkeley SafeTREC, followed by improper turning and right-of-way violations.
Saturday's crash adds to a string of recent motorcycle collisions across the High Desert that Hoodline has covered, including a fatal Cajon Pass crash and a fatal collision on Hesperia's Seventh Avenue in August. Apple Valley in particular has seen repeated fatal motorcycle incidents in recent years, underscoring the risks riders face on the region's rural roadways after dark.
