According to arrest documents obtained by WSOC TV, Valentine initially got into a fight with a friend of Martinez's. He then left the apartment, only to return roughly 45 minutes later carrying a gun. Investigators say Valentine allegedly shot Martinez several times once he came back, according to the same documents.
Martinez was a former Greensboro police officer, and he had traveled from the Triad to Charlotte to attend a Charlotte FC soccer game and play in a hockey game over the weekend, according to a separate report from wsoctv.com. That report identified him as the victim killed in the Sunday morning shooting Uptown.
Manhunt Ended Across State Lines
Authorities arrested Valentine in Union County, South Carolina, in connection with the killing, per the earlier wsoctv.com report. Valentine was returned to Mecklenburg County on Sept. 23 and is now held in the Mecklenburg County Jail, per the arrest documents cited by the same outlet. He faces a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of Martinez, and investigators say the investigation remains ongoing.
