A driver is dead after a Jeep Liberty slammed into the back of a Chevrolet Cobalt at high speed on southbound I-225 in Aurora, triggering a rollover that ejected the Jeep's only occupant early Saturday morning. Police say the crash happened around 2 a.m. near East Alameda Avenue, and the driver later died from injuries suffered in the wreck.
Officers responded to the stretch of highway south of East Alameda Avenue at about 2 a.m. on September 12, according to Sentinel Colorado. Police said the Jeep Liberty driver was accused of driving the vehicle at a high rate of speed into the rear of the Cobalt, which was traveling southbound in the number one lane at the time of impact.
The collision sent the Jeep rolling, and its driver — the only person inside — was ejected during the crash, per the same account. That driver was transported to an area hospital, where they later died from injuries sustained in the rollover, police said.
Cobalt Occupants Escape With Minor Injuries
The people riding in the Chevy Cobalt were also taken to a nearby hospital, but police reported their injuries were minor. Investigators have not detailed how many people were inside the Cobalt or their conditions beyond that characterization.
Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, the report states, though authorities cautioned that a final determination will not come until the investigation wraps up. Coroner officials are expected to release the identity of the driver who died at a later date.
Part of a Recurring Pattern on This Stretch of Highway
This is not the first fatal crash tied to speed and alcohol on this corridor. A Sentinel Colorado report from July 2025 also pointed to speed and alcohol as suspected factors in a separate fatal crash on I-225 at Alameda, underscoring how this same interchange has repeatedly been the scene of serious collisions.
The highway has also seen other types of major incidents in recent months. In May, a five-vehicle crash shut down southbound I-225 during the Thursday morning commute and sent two people to the hospital, according to CBS News Colorado. And in 2023, a fatal rollover involving a Corvette on northbound I-225 killed its driver while a passenger survived, as reported by The Denver Post.
No additional details about citations, charges, or the driver's identity have been released. The investigation into Saturday's crash remains active, and authorities have not yet announced a final cause.
