Aurora police are investigating after officers found a man unresponsive at a bus stop along East Colfax Avenue on Wednesday evening, an incident the department is treating as an active death investigation. Officers were dispatched to the stop near East Colfax Avenue and Dayton Street at about 5:31 p.m. and found the man unresponsive.
According to a statement posted by the Aurora Police Dept
, officers responded to a call of an unresponsive adult male at the bus stop near East Colfax Avenue and Dayton Street at about 5:31 p.m. Wednesday. “When officers arrived on scene they found the adult male unresponsive,” the department said in its post. Police described the case simply as “an active death investigation” and added that “this is all we are able to provide at this” time, offering no further detail on the man's identity, his cause of death, or whether foul play is suspected.
What Police Have — And Haven't — Said
The department's statement, shared through its official account, is the only information released so far. No identity has been provided for the man found at the bus stop, and Aurora police have not said whether they believe the death is suspicious. As of Thursday evening, no coroner findings, arrests, or additional updates had been made public.
The Dayton Street bus stop sits in a stretch of East Colfax Avenue that has seen other serious incidents in recent years, though there is no indication any of them are connected to Wednesday's death. In December, officers were called to the area of East Colfax Avenue and Boston Street at about 7:15 a.m. after reports of an unresponsive man near the street, and he was pronounced deceased shortly after officers arrived, according to The Sentinel. In that case, police said they did not suspect foul play in the man's death, but no such determination has been made public regarding Wednesday's incident.
A Corridor With a History of Violence
The East Colfax and Dayton Street area was also the scene of a mass shooting in November 2021, when five people were shot near a large party on East Colfax Avenue at about 12:04 a.m., as reported by The Denver Post. Officers at the time found two victims in the 1500 block of Dayton Street while three others sought treatment at a nearby hospital, and all five were expected to survive. That shooting followed two other multiple-victim shootings in Aurora earlier that November, and investigators closed Dayton Street between Colfax and East 16th Avenue during their probe without identifying a suspect at the time.
There is no evidence tying that 2021 shooting, or the December death near Boston Street, to Wednesday's investigation at the Dayton Street bus stop. Aurora police have not released the man's identity or cause of death, and it remains unclear when the department will provide further updates on the case.
