Austin is waking up warm and humid Friday, with partly cloudy skies and a chance of showers before the heat takes over. The temperature was near 80 degrees early Friday, and the afternoon high is expected to reach 96, with the heat index climbing to 104.
Showers could linger through late morning, followed by a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms from early afternoon through about 4 p.m. Rain chances are around 30%, and a few heavier downpours could briefly cause ponding on roads or minor flooding, according to the National Weather Service.
Weekend Heat Builds Quickly
Friday night should be mostly clear, with a low near 77 degrees and light southeast winds. Saturday will be mostly sunny and hotter, reaching 99 degrees with a heat index as high as 106.
Sunday brings another mostly sunny day with a high near 98 and a small chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. Rain chances remain limited near Austin, while moisture and sea-breeze storms are more likely east of Interstate 35.
Labor Day Could Hit 100 Degrees
Monday is expected to be the hottest day of the extended forecast, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 100. The heat continues Tuesday through Thursday, when highs are forecast to stay between 98 and 99 degrees and overnight lows remain near 77.
No watches, warnings or advisories are in effect for the Austin area. Still, the combination of high temperatures, humidity and light winds will make afternoon outdoor plans feel considerably hotter than the thermometer suggests.
