A familiar name in downtown Baton Rouge nightlife is stepping into the coffee business. Cornelius Quarels is building out a new café called Vinyl on 6th at 141 6th St., transforming a 1,200-square-foot building in the heart of downtown into what will be his latest venture.
The project is confirmed through a permit filing with East Baton Rouge Parish, which shows plans for renovations including painting, adding a handicap ramp and replacing a fence, according to WhatNow. Quarels confirmed to the outlet that the café will be called Vinyl on 6th, though he has not yet provided additional information about the concept, menu or timeline.
Who Is Behind Vinyl on 6th
Quarels is described as a local investor and restaurateur who has become a prominent developer in Baton Rouge's downtown corridor. He opened the lounge and rooftop bar Firehaus in 2023, and he also owns another rooftop bar in the city, The Main Lobby. Both spots have built reputations for elevated, lively atmospheres, per the same report.
Beyond confirming the café's name, Quarels has kept details close to the vest. The permit filing offers the clearest picture so far of what's coming to the address: cosmetic and accessibility upgrades to the existing building rather than a full-scale construction project.
Part of a Bigger Caffeine Wave
Vinyl on 6th arrives as Baton Rouge's coffee scene has been busy expanding. Several new coffee shops have opened around the city since the start of 2026, shaking up the local caffeine scene, according to The Advocate. Among the recent entrants is Las Brujas Coffee & Grocery, which owner David Villa has described as a community-oriented bodega. It'll really be a community spot, he told the paper, with plans for a menu of espresso, americano, blended cold brew, specialty lattes, matcha, chai and loose-leaf teas, plus grocery goods from a dozen lined-up vendors including St. Bruno Bread Co. and Bayou Sarah Farms.
Downtown Baton Rouge has also welcomed House Brew's first brick-and-mortar location at 278 North St., a milestone after two years of operating as a mobile cart and later a pop-up residency at the Mid City bar Pelican to Mars, per 225 Baton Rouge. That shop's menu includes hot and cold coffee and tea alongside cinnamon rolls, cookies and other baked goods, breakfast burritos and specialty paninis.
With Vinyl on 6th joining that lineup, downtown Baton Rouge's coffee options keep multiplying even as many of the specifics behind Quarels's new café remain unannounced.
