Bet365 has officially launched its sportsbook in Washington, D.C., striking a multi-year sponsorship deal with Monumental Sports & Entertainment that puts the British betting giant's name behind the Capitals, Wizards and Mystics all at once. The move gives bet365 a foothold in a city where mobile wagering has already reshaped how local fans watch and bet on their favorite teams.
According to the seed reporting from The Independent, bet365's Washington launch is its 18th U.S. jurisdiction, making the D.C. launch part of a broader continental push. Trip Stoddard, bet365's head of development, said the Monumental Sports partnership will introduce the brand to Capitals, Wizards and Mystics fans, and called it a chance to expand the company's reach in the U.S. while establishing a presence in what he described as a dynamic sports market, per the same report.
The sponsorship comes with more than just a logo on a jersey. Bet365 will appear via virtual signage and commercials before and during games, and its branding will show up across team broadcasts on the Monumental Sports Network, the outlet's reporting indicates. As part of the deal, bet365 will serve as the presenting sponsor of Monumental Game Center, an opt-in streaming overlay on the Monumental+ app that layers real-time betting odds and interactive gamification into live streams of Capitals, Wizards and Mystics games, according to Legal Sports Report.
A Market That Used to Be a Government Monopoly
D.C.'s sports betting scene looked very different just a few years ago. The District's digital betting market launched in 2020 as a government-run monopoly under the DC Lottery's GambetDC platform before transitioning to FanDuel in April 2024 and then opening to a multi-operator competitive market that July, according to WSN. WSN reports that GambetDC faced disappointing revenue and criticism from bettors.
That regulatory overhaul has paid off in volume. In July 2026, D.C.'s regulated sports betting market processed $64.2 million in total wagers, a 15% increase year-over-year, per iGaming.News. Those figures underline the scale of the local market as bet365 enters it.
Betting on 18-Year-Olds and a Younger Fan Base
Washington is also one of the few U.S. jurisdictions where adults as young as 18 can legally place a sports bet, while many other markets require bettors to be 21, Legal Sports Report notes. That quirk of District law makes local college-aged fans an accessible target audience for operators like bet365, which offers a sportsbook covering more than 100 sports along with live and in-play betting, the Early Bird Special for Sunday NFL games, an Early Payout offer, and a promotion for new users, per The Independent's report.
Class C sports betting operators like bet365, defined as those partnered with local professional sports franchises, are subject to a 30% tax rate on gross sports wagering revenue in D.C., compared to 20% for Class A stadium operators and 10% for Class B local business venues, according to the DC Office of Tax and Revenue. The tax rates were amended in July 2024.
Clearing a Legal Hurdle Before the Launch
The D.C. launch also arrives after a legal cloud over licensed sportsbooks in the District was lifted. In April 2026, a federal judge dismissed a major lawsuit targeting licensed D.C. sportsbooks, according to SBC Americas. A Delaware LLC had invoked a centuries-old British statute to demand hundreds of millions of dollars in historical gambling losses from major operators, per the same report.
Bet365's Washington entry marks its fourth new North American market launch within a six-month stretch, following online sportsbook and casino rollouts in Michigan in April 2026, Alberta in July 2026, and West Virginia in August 2026, SBC Americas reports. The company has expanded its U.S. state licensing footprint, according to the outlet.
A Playbook Built on Team Sponsorships
Outside of the new D.C. deal, bet365 has established team sponsorship agreements across North America with the NBA's Charlotte Hornets, Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers, the NHL's Colorado Avalanche, and the WNBA's Chicago Sky, according to SCCG Take. Partnering with regional team brands allows the British operator to gain immediate local trust and broadcast integration as it competes against U.S.-native sportsbooks.
Bet365 is an international sports-betting company, according to iGamingToday. The company's North American expansion is part of its broader international business, the outlet notes.
Bet365's D.C. launch also fits into a wider expansion strategy. The company's local team deals are one part of its broader effort to build its presence in legal sports betting markets.
