Billy Bob's Texas has quietly become a different venue on the inside. General manager Marty Travis announced that the Fort Worth Stockyards honky-tonk recently doubled its speaker output, installed new LED lighting atop the main stage, and moved speakers into suspended positions overhead to spread sound more evenly across the massive room.
The changes came together after roughly six months of planning. Production manager John Zaskoda and his crew executed the physical work over just a few days in late August, and the venue debuted the new system during a show with Charley Crockett on August 28. Zaskoda said the upgrades addressed a sound problem the venue had grappled with for 45 years.
Coverage, Not Just Volume
The added speakers were designed to increase sound coverage rather than crank up overall volume, per the paper's report. By suspending speakers rather than mounting them at stage level, the crew aimed to distribute audio more evenly throughout the room instead of concentrating it near the front. Three new trusses carrying lighting fixtures were also added, giving the club a rig the report says resembles the lighting found at larger concert venues like Dickies Arena.
Zaskoda discussed the venue's sound and lighting upgrades. Travis, who has spent 31 years at Billy Bob's Texas, said the club's sound, lights, and overall show quality have continually improved during his tenure, and he teased that more upgrade announcements are coming soon.
Decades of Under-the-Hood Changes
The 2026 overhaul is the latest in a string of technical and structural updates to a building that has led several lives since 1910, when it opened as an open-air cattle barn for the Fort Worth Stock Show. A roof was added to the structure in 1936 as part of the Texas Centennial project. It later served as a World War II airplane parts factory and as Clark's Department Store before becoming a honky-tonk on April 1, 1981, according to Visit Fort Worth.
That layout has repeatedly complicated efforts to modernize the space. In July 2022, the club removed two structural support columns to clear sightlines for 250 previously obstructed seats in the main showroom, a project CultureMap Fort Worth described. The building spans somewhere between 100,000 and 127,000 square feet and holds an official capacity of 6,000 patrons, per the Star-Telegram's reporting.
A Venue With National Standing
Billy Bob's Texas received its 14th ACM Club of the Year nomination in 2022 and had won the award 10 times by then, according to Focus Daily News.
