Kansas City Parks and Recreation cut the ribbon Wednesday on a brand-new outdoor roller-skating rink at Blues Park, giving the historic 18th & Vine neighborhood a 16,000-square-foot concrete slab built for spins, laps and community gatherings. The 4 p.m. ceremony at 2400 E. 20th St. drew residents eager to see years of planning finally pour into pavement, complete with a performance from SK8 SHOT Studios, a free beginner skating lesson and an open skate session for anyone who wanted to lace up.
The rink caps a $1.7 million investment in Blues Park that also brought new 8-foot-wide sidewalks, pathway connections, restrooms and a parking lot to the site, according to kcparks.org. Kansas City Parks and Recreation had broken ground on the project back in May, and the finished rink features a post-tensioned concrete slab and fiberglass dasherboards designed to hold up under heavy use, the department noted in its groundbreaking announcement.
As Fox 4 Kansas City reported, the opening was framed as an effort to bring recreation, energy and community activity back to the neighborhood, with community members telling the station the project represents a positive and long-awaited investment in the area. A limited number of skates were made available for attendees to use, though visitors were encouraged to bring their own pairs for opening day.
A Skater's Years-Long Push Pays Off
Among those celebrating was Dimitri Milligan, a Kansas City native and longtime roller skater who has pushed the city for a community skating rink for nearly five years, per the same Fox 4 report. Milligan's advocacy tracked alongside a broader neighborhood conversation: when the project broke ground in May, some nearby residents told KCUR they worried about what could potentially happen with the noise, even as others said a nearby place to skate might spark more healthy activity in the neighborhood.
The rink becomes just the second roller-skating facility in the Kansas City parks system, joining the roller hockey rink at Holmes Park, according to kcparks.org's groundbreaking release. City officials have said the revitalized Blues Park is expected to serve as both a neighborhood gathering space and a destination recreation amenity for visitors from beyond the immediate area.
Part Of A Much Bigger Corridor Push
The Blues Park upgrades are one piece of Revive the Vine, described by Kansas City Parks and Recreation as a more than $400 million public-private reinvestment effort focused on revitalizing the historic 18th & Vine corridor. KCTV5 reported that the broader initiative is aimed at revitalizing the district for both neighborhood residents and tourists, positioning the new rink as a small but visible piece of a much larger redevelopment push in one of Kansas City's most storied neighborhoods.
For now, the focus stays on the pavement itself: a fresh concrete surface, a skate performance, and a free lesson meant to get newcomers rolling. Parks and Recreation billed the afternoon as an invitation for the community to celebrate the new addition to Blues Park, closing out a project that started with a groundbreaking in May and, for at least one longtime local skater, years of asking the city to build it.
