Boardman High School senior Maya Flores has become the volleyball program's all-time kills leader, capping a senior season that already included a school single-match record of 43 kills and a milestone 1,000th career kill. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter and middle blocker has spent the past few weeks rewriting the Spartans' record book one match at a time.
According to WKBN, Flores broke Boardman's all-time kills record during her senior campaign, a milestone that arrived on the heels of a historic stretch of performances. The record-setting run began building with an August 28 Boardman High School athletics announcement that Flores had set a new school single-match record with 43 kills against Warren JFK High School, according to the Boardman Local School District.
Just days later, on August 31, Flores surpassed 1,000 career kills during a 3-0 sweep over Girard High School, finishing that match with 23 kills and 21 digs, the school district's athletics feed reported. Flores hit the milestone while still adding to her senior-year totals.
A Scoring Pace That Kept Climbing
Flores didn't let up in the days that followed. She recorded 27 kills in a 3-0 sweep of rival Poland High School on September 8, then was scheduled to face Struthers High School the next day, according to Your Sports Network. She also had 18 digs against Poland during that stretch, per the same outlet.
Through 28 sets this season, Flores has posted a .424 hitting percentage while racking up 200 kills, averaging more than seven kills per set, according to MaxPreps.
Staying Home for College
Flores's rise has been building for years. During her fall 2025 junior season, she was one of only three hitters in the All-American Conference to record more than 400 total kills, per Prep Dig. She also trains in the off-season with the Cleveland Volleyball Company's 17 Black club program, a common proving ground for college recruits.
Back on October 3, 2025, Flores announced her commitment to play NCAA Division I volleyball at Youngstown State University, choosing to stay close to home for her college career. The senior noted that remaining near her family was a central motivation behind the decision, the sports outlet reported.
Youngstown State's athletics history includes Jen Perugini, who was inducted into the Youngstown State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015 for women's basketball, according to Youngstown State Athletics.
Beyond the Court
Flores's résumé extends past volleyball. She has an unweighted 4.0 GPA and is taking three honors classes, according to Your Sports Network.
Her senior season continues within a program with a Volley for the Cure tradition.
