A boat being towed down Interstate 75 in Pasco County ended up skidding loose across the southbound lanes Sunday evening after an SUV driver failed to make the curve at the bottom of an entrance ramp and slammed into the trailer hauling it. The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. near Blanton Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, and despite the vessel being thrown onto an active interstate, no injuries were reported.
Florida Highway Patrol says a 43-year-old Summerfield man was driving an Acura MDX down the entrance ramp from Blanton Road toward southbound I-75 when he lost control and crossed into the outside lane, where a 66-year-old Tarpon Springs man was towing a boat on a trailer behind his Chevy Silverado. The Acura crashed into the boat trailer, and the impact knocked the boat off the trailer entirely, according to Tampa Free Press, which first reported the crash. The boat was then dragged along the interstate before it came to a stop on the roadway.
No Injuries Despite a Vessel Loose on the Highway
Troopers say the collision could have escalated quickly given the setting: a detached boat thrown onto an active interstate lane, with vehicles still moving around it. Yet according to the same report, none of the drivers or passengers involved sustained injuries. Under Florida law, drivers are required to operate their vehicles with care with regard to roadway curves and traffic conditions. A failure to do so that causes a crash is treated as a civil moving violation carrying four points on a license, according to Gordon & Partners, meaning the Acura driver could face that citation for failing to negotiate the ramp curve.
Towing Rules and the Question of Securement
Separately, Florida law requires that any load or cargo towed on a trailer be covered and secured against shifting or falling onto public roads, with violations carrying civil fines up to $500, per guidance cited by the Fellsmere Police Department. State guidelines from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles also require boat trailers weighing 2,000 pounds or more to be titled and registered, and mandate safety chains, tie-downs, and working brake and turn lights. It remains unclear from the available reporting whether the trailer met those securement standards before the Acura struck it, since the boat separated only after the impact.
A Ramp With a History of Trouble
This is not the first serious incident at this stretch of I-75 near Blanton Road, which intersects County Road 41 at Exit 293 near Dade City and the Hernando County line, according to AARoads. In December 2022, troopers investigated a fatal crash at the same Blanton Road entrance ramp to southbound I-75, when a 75-year-old motorcyclist failed to merge safely and struck a vehicle, shutting down all southbound lanes, according to St. Pete Law Group. And in July 2022, troopers responded near Blanton Road after an SUV driver towing a camper lost control at excessive speed, causing the trailer to fishtail, overturn, and block interstate lanes, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times.
More recently, in April 2026, troopers reported a fatal crash on Blanton Road near Parrish Grove Road after an SUV driver failed to negotiate a curve, hit trees, and died in a subsequent vehicle fire, as covered by Hoodline in a prior crash tied to the same corridor. Rising Fatalities Countywide
The crash adds to a broader pattern of concern in Pasco County traffic safety. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles recorded 7,075 total motor vehicle crashes and 111 traffic fatalities countywide in 2024, a 20.65% increase in fatalities over the prior year, according to the agency's own crash report data.
The area around the I-75 and Blanton Road interchange is also facing pressure from growth. In 2025, Pasco County commissioners evaluated a $15 million infrastructure incentive package tied to an 80-acre development project near Blanton Road, aimed at expanding commercial and industrial space close to the Exit 293 interchange, according to Pasco County development records. Much of the surrounding land remains governed by the county's rural protection land use overlay, which limits dense commercial zoning absent specific land-use plan amendments, meaning the ramp's rural design has so far stayed largely unchanged even as traffic volumes climb.
