Brad Pitt’s surprise appearance at Edwards’ Riverwalk Theater turned a Paramount Pictures promotional event into a local celebrity moment Monday. The actor visited the four-screen, locally owned cinema during a private preview of Heart of the Beast, greeting attendees and later posing for a photo with three local children.
According to The Denver Post, Paramount organized the visit as part of its Heart of the Beast Colorado Creator Retreat, which included a private screening for roughly 50 people. The studio contacted Riverwalk Theater about hosting the gathering and kept the possibility of Pitt’s attendance confidential, the newspaper reported. Pitt greeted the influencers attending the preview, took promotional photos with director David Ayer and later posed with local children.
Riverwalk Theater is owned by Grant and Katherine Smith, according to the same report. The couple has run the theater since acquiring its operations in April 2018, and under their ownership the venue has expanded its food, beverage and community programming, according to a VoyageDenver profile of Grant Smith. The theater’s local identity gave Paramount a community venue for a creator-focused promotion rather than a conventional multiplex.
A Quiet Corner of the Vail Valley Gets a Star Turn
Edwards is an unincorporated community in Eagle County with a 2020 census population of 11,246, making it the most populous residential area in the county, per Wikipedia. It sits along the Eagle River west of Vail and Avon. The Denver Post identified the children who posed with Pitt as Posey Vilece, Ford Smith and Owen Vilece.
A Community Cinema and a Modern Promotion
The Riverwalk Theater’s community role predates the Smiths’ ownership: Vail Daily reported that the theater was built in 1995 and has served as a community gathering space ever since. According to Riverwalk Theater, its Sustainable Community Film Series raises awareness and encourages community dialogue about environmental issues. The Edwards event also reflects a broader shift in film promotion. Yahoo Entertainment reports that influencer screenings have become a key entertainment-marketing strategy for building anticipation before a film’s release, while noting that enthusiasm generated by such events does not guarantee audience response.
The film at the center of all this attention is Heart of the Beast, in which Pitt stars as a former Special Forces officer alongside Oscar winner J.K. Simmons, Anna Lambe, and a rescue dog named Uber, who plays his combat dog Odin, according to TheWrap. It is set for a nationwide theatrical release on September 25.
Reuniting With a Fury Collaborator
Heart of the Beast marks the second directorial pairing of Pitt and Ayer, who previously worked together on the 2014 World War II tank drama Fury, which grossed $211.8 million worldwide, according to Love Horror. The screenplay, written by Cameron Alexander, had a long road to the screen: it originally appeared on the 2017 Black List of Hollywood's most admired unproduced scripts before being optioned years later, per the same outlet.
Though the story is set in the Alaskan wilderness, principal photography actually took place in Queenstown, New Zealand, between March 3 and May 15, 2025, according to Wikipedia. Oscar-winning filmmaker Damien Chazelle and producer Olivia Hamilton produced the film through Wild Chickens Productions under a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the same entry states. Before its American theatrical run, the film is scheduled to make its international debut at the San Sebastián International Film Festival on September 22.
Part of a Bigger Studio Push
The Edwards stop was one piece of a broader Paramount marketing effort. The Colorado Creator Retreat also included a live musical gathering featuring country-rock artist Stephen Wilson Jr., who performed “Stand By Me” alongside Pitt and Ayer, according to a Paramount Pictures post.
