A Sarasota County Breeze Transit bus veered off South Tamiami Trail and crashed into the concrete monument sign marking the entrance to State College of Florida's Venice campus on Monday, injuring seven people after first colliding with another vehicle. The wreck happened at 8000 S. Tamiami Trail in South Sarasota County.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, the bus collided with another vehicle near the college's Venice campus before veering off the roadway, as reported by Tampa Bay 28. Tampa Free Press adds that the bus veered off the highway after striking the other vehicle before slamming directly into the campus sign, offering a clearer picture of how the crash unfolded in the seconds after the initial impact.
Emergency crews treated seven people at the scene in total. Three were taken to the Wellen Park Emergency Room and one was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice, per the same report from Tampa Bay 28. Two more people were evaluated and released at the scene, while one person refused treatment altogether.
Two Hospitals Split the Response
The divided medical response reflects how much South Sarasota County's emergency care landscape has grown in just the last few years. HCA Florida Wellen Park Emergency, which took in three of the injured, only opened in March 2025 as a 24/7 freestanding emergency center built specifically to expand emergency medical access in the area, according to Local Life Homes. The lone patient sent to Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice was transported there.
That hospital opened in November 2021 as a 212-bed acute care center, per the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. Together, the two facilities treated patients from the crash.
Campus Sign Sits at Busy Entrance
The monument sign the bus struck marks the entrance to State College of Florida's Venice campus, which has operated at 8000 South Tamiami Trail since 1985, according to State College of Florida. The campus also houses State College of Florida Collegiate School Venice.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office reported no road closures following the crash, according to Tampa Bay 28's reporting. That detail suggests the wreck, despite the number of people injured, did not require an extended shutdown of South Tamiami Trail.
Transit Agency Carries Millions of Riders
The bus involved belongs to Breeze Transit, the name Sarasota County announced in early 2024 when it rebranded from Sarasota County Area Transit, or SCAT, according to Sarasota Magazine. The system includes fixed-route service.
Because Breeze Transit operates as a county-run public agency, any legal claims arising from the crash would fall under Florida's sovereign immunity framework. Florida Statute § 768.28 governs claims involving government-operated transit buses, establishing statutory damage caps and mandatory administrative pre-suit notice deadlines that differ from standard motor vehicle claims, according to Todd Miner Law.
A Corridor Already Under Scrutiny
South Tamiami Trail has drawn heightened attention from local law enforcement in recent months. In August, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office launched a High Visibility Enforcement program targeting high-risk traffic corridors, including multiple segments of South Tamiami Trail, after Sarasota County ranked among Florida's top 25 counties for crashes resulting in serious injuries or deaths, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.
The specific cause of the initial two-vehicle collision, along with the status of any citations from the Sheriff's Office investigation, has not yet been disclosed.
