Brenna Whitaker is trading horns for a more intimate, guitar-driven sound when she takes the stage at Palm Springs’ Purple Room Supper Club on Friday, September 11, at 8 p.m. The Missouri-born, Los Angeles-based vocalist will perform songs from her new album Reverie alongside Broadway and pop classics, backed by pianist Michael Orland, best known for his 16 seasons on American Idol.
Whitaker has described the shift away from the brass-heavy arrangements of her earlier work, saying the horns from her past musical projects are no longer part of her current stage sound, according to NBC Palm Springs. Reverie, released August 14, 2026, leans instead on a more acoustic, guitar-based sound, and Whitaker recorded the entire album in just two days working with top Nashville session musicians who, she said, make her rise to the occasion. The album was released on Green Hill Music, a boutique lifestyle label under Sun Label Group and Primary Wave Music, and produced by award-winning pianist Gordon Mote, according to a Green Hill Music announcement.
The record features music by Leon Russell, Carly Simon, Burt Bacharach, and Stephen Sondheim. Whitaker has singled out Russell's A Song for You as one of her favorite tracks on the album. She has also said she loves being in the studio, telling NBC Palm Springs, “I love being in the studio.”
A Nashville Studio Surge Follows a Verve Records Debut
Reverie is not an isolated project. Enraptured is an earlier collection of covers, and Whitaker is now producing newer recordings in Nashville, with a holiday record titled Simply Christmas due out in October 2026 featuring her original composition “The Simple Things,” per her own official website. The pace marks a resurgence for an artist who first broke through in 2015 with a self-titled debut on Verve Records, produced by David Foster, who signed her as his first new-artist project after discovering Michael Bublé, as PopMatters reported at the time.
Long before her Verve deal, Whitaker was performing in regional professional theater at age 11 in Missouri before moving to New York at 17 to train under Broadway veterans, according to Renowned For Sound. That theatrical grounding later fed into the Los Angeles jazz residencies that built her Southern California profile, including an ongoing monthly engagement at Herb Alpert's Vibrato Grill Jazz in Bel Air, where several artists have joined her performances.
An American Idol Veteran Joins Her Onstage
Sharing the stage Friday is Michael Orland, a musician who spent 16 seasons as associate musical director, pianist, arranger, and vocal coach on American Idol across its Fox and ABC broadcasts. Beyond television, Orland served as associate musical director on NBC's Hairspray Live!, according to a Yamaha Artists.
Whitaker and Orland have developed a strong performing partnership over the years, with Orland helping tell the stories behind the songs during their shows. Whitaker has called him the funniest person she has ever met. The pairing brings together two performers with deep roots in Hollywood entertainment, one shaped by cabaret and musical theater, the other by reality-TV musical direction.
A Rat Pack Landmark Reopens for Fall
The Purple Room, located inside Palm Springs' Club Trinidad Hotel, opened in 1960 and became famous as an unofficial desert retreat for Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, who dined, drank, and gave impromptu performances there, per Chowhound. Performer and managing partner Michael Holmes acquired and renovated the venue in 2013, restoring its 1960s mid-century design while re-establishing its combined dinner-and-live-performance model, according to the Coachella Valley Independent.
The fall performance season includes Whitaker's Friday show, with dinner service and doors opening at 6 p.m. ahead of the 8 p.m. performance. Whitaker has performed at the Purple Room for several years and calls it her favorite club, describing the venue as offering an intimate, traditional cabaret experience.
Whitaker, who has family living in the Coachella Valley, said tickets for Friday's show are selling quickly. Those who miss it will get another local chance to see her: she is scheduled to perform at the McCallum Theatre on December 23, 2026.
