A 20-year-old man was shot in broad daylight Wednesday afternoon on the 1200 block of Fairmount Avenue in North Philadelphia, police said. The shooting happened around 4:19 p.m., and the victim was rushed to a hospital in unknown condition.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, officers had not made any arrests and had not recovered a weapon as of the station's report. The outlet noted the shooting remains under investigation, and its crew found an active crime scene still taped off when they arrived.
No suspect description or motive has been released for Wednesday's shooting, and the man's specific injuries have not been detailed publicly. The station's report gave no further information on how the shooting unfolded.
A Block With a Recent History of Violence
The 1200 block of Fairmount Avenue has been the scene of more than one violent incident in recent months. A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot while riding a bike on that same block around 8:38 p.m. on May 25, according to 6ABC, which reported that police were still searching for three suspects in connection with that killing.
Nearby, at 12th Street and Fairmount Avenue, a 35-year-old woman was left in critical condition after being shot in the chest, per FOX 29. And at the Federal Donuts store near North Seventh Street and Fairmount Avenue, a 14-year-old boy and a 27-year-old man were both shot on a Thursday afternoon, PhillyVoice reported.
Part of a Broader Pattern in North Philadelphia
North Philadelphia has seen other daytime shootings this year as well. On August 18, a broad-daylight shooting near 22nd Street and Ridge Avenue killed a 78-year-old man and wounded two other men, according to KYW Newsradio, which reported that police recovered more than 50 spent shell casings from several semi-automatic weapons at that scene.
Citywide, the picture is more complicated. Through June 15, 286 people had been shot in Philadelphia, nearly 36% fewer than by the same date the previous year, according to Philadelphia Police Department data cited by Metro Philadelphia. Even as the overall trend has moved downward, this stretch of Fairmount Avenue keeps drawing police tape.
