A 45-year-old man was shot in the left side of his torso late Friday night at East 158th Street and Concourse Village West, and police are now searching for two suspects who fled the scene on Citi Bikes. Officers responded to a 911 call at 10:46 p.m. and found the victim with a gunshot wound; he was taken to Lincoln Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
According to News 12 Bronx, the cause of the shooting remains unclear. The victim was brought to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, a 362-bed South Bronx facility whose Level 1 Trauma Center emergency department is the region's busiest, handling more than 140,000 emergency visits a year — the same hospital that treated a 26-year-old man shot in the leg just three days earlier outside 730 Grand Concourse near Franz Sigel Park, a few blocks away.
Recent Shootings Near the Same Corridor
That earlier shooting, which Hoodline previously reported, drew a crowd on Grand Concourse and left shell casings outside an Art Deco residential building adjacent to the park. Together with Friday's incident, it points to a cluster of gun violence within blocks of one another in under a week.
The intersection of East 158th Street and Concourse Village West has seen trouble before. In May 2024, News 12 Bronx reported that NYPD searched for two men who forcibly stole a cell phone from a 66-year-old man seated on a corner bench there — a reminder that the corner connects residential complexes with high-density pedestrian walkways.
Citi Bikes as a Recurring Escape Tactic
The suspects' reported flight on Citi Bikes echoes a pattern police have flagged elsewhere in the Bronx. In September 2025, News 12 Bronx reported that a shooter fled on a Citi Bike after shooting a 20-year-old man in the face on East 161st Street, and Hoodline has separately covered a Mount Hope duo firing from a bike. The devices let suspects maneuver through traffic and narrow side streets faster than patrol cruisers, an ongoing operational challenge for precinct commanders.
Concourse Village West is also a residential and educational corridor. That density prompted an NYC Department of Transportation safety and traffic study for the stretch between East 153rd and East 161st streets, with community members previously raising concerns about double-parking and traffic enforcement in the area.
Precinct Numbers Tell a Mixed Story
The shooting falls within the NYPD's 44th Precinct, which covers Concourse Village and Highbridge from its station house at 2 East 169th Street. CBS News reported that as of late July, the precinct had logged 18 shooting incidents for the year, a 28.6% jump from the 14 recorded over the same period in 2025. Yet overall major crime in the precinct actually fell 12.65% in 2025, dropping from 3,068 offenses in 2024 to 2,680, per Norwood News CompStat figures.
That local uptick provides a comparison point for citywide trends.
If suspects are identified and charged, intentionally shooting someone and causing serious physical injury can be prosecuted under New York Penal Law § 120.10 as Assault in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony carrying a mandatory state prison sentence of 5 to 25 years, according to Police1.
A Neighborhood With a Painful History
Concourse Village has also been the site of more severe violence in the past. The New York Post has reported on the unsolved November 2018 killing of 45-year-old hospital worker Wendy Martinez, who was fatally shot through her apartment door peephole at 760 Grand Concourse — an attack detectives linked to a gang-related case of mistaken identity, part of an ongoing rival gang dispute Hoodline has revisited recently.
No further details on a motive or the identities of the two suspects have been released. Police have not said whether the victim was targeted or caught up in a dispute, and the investigation remains active.
