A routine drug sting outside a Brookfield hotel erupted into a frantic scene last Thursday afternoon when a 19-year-old Milwaukee man allegedly rammed his black Mercedes into police vehicles trying to escape. Officers ended up boxing in the car with their own squads, guns and tasers drawn, before making the arrest. No one was hurt, but four police vehicles came away damaged.
The operation targeted an alleged drug dealer in the parking lot of the Brookfield Sheraton along Moorland Road, according to WISN. Officers moved in to surround the Mercedes driven by Alex Cook Bey, and the station reports that Cook Bey responded by driving into the police vehicles around him, which then pinned his car in place to stop the escape. Drone footage obtained by the station shows the chaotic standoff, with officers jumping out of their vehicles with tasers and guns because they were concerned Cook Bey could be armed.
Drone Footage Captures Five Squads Closing In
The video obtained by WISN shows five squad cars converging on the black Mercedes as the confrontation unfolds in the hotel lot. Among the vehicles involved was an undercover car that had its markings blurred out in the footage, according to the seed reporting from ABC7 Chicago. Despite the intensity of the ramming and the boxed-in standoff, the same reporting notes that no one was injured during the arrest, though four police vehicles sustained damage.
Cocaine Charges and Reckless Endangerment Counts
Prosecutors have charged Cook Bey with five counts of recklessly endangering safety tied to the risk his driving posed to the officers on scene. He also faces a charge stemming from 19 grams of cocaine that prosecutors believe he intended to sell. Cook Bey remains in custody on $50,000 cash bail, per the reporting on the case.
The Milwaukee resident's attempt to flee turned what began as an undercover buy into a scramble that played out in full view of the drone camera hovering above the Sheraton parking lot. The footage stands as the clearest public record so far of how quickly the sting escalated once Cook Bey allegedly chose to ram his way out rather than stop.
