A 26-year-old man was slashed in the face by a stranger inside the Rockaway Avenue subway station in Brownsville, according to police, in an attack that sent him to the hospital and left the attacker on the run. The assault happened on the southbound C train platform just before 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 20, 2026, and no arrests had been made as of the latest update.
The victim was slashed by a stranger on the platform before the attacker boarded a C train and fled, according to News 12 Brooklyn. Paramedics took the victim to Brookdale Hospital, and police say he is expected to recover. Investigators described the attacker only as wearing dark-colored clothing, and the search for the suspect remains active.
A Station With a Violent Recent History
Sunday's slashing is not the first serious act of violence at this stop. On September 4, 2024, 47-year-old Freddie Weston was shot in the head and killed on the mezzanine level of the Rockaway Avenue station, a case that led to the arrest of a suspect two months later, according to FOX 5 New York. The station has also seen bladed attacks before. In February 2024, MTA conductor Alton Scott, then 59, suffered a deep neck slash requiring 34 stitches during an unprovoked attack while leaning out of an A train window at the same station, as reported by Patch. The Rockaway Avenue station on the IND Fulton Street line falls under NYPD Transit District 33, which is headquartered at Broadway Junction; the 73rd Precinct serves Brownsville, per NYC.gov.

Between 2006 and March 2026, the 73rd Precinct logged 1,302 shooting incidents, the second-highest total of any precinct citywide behind neighboring East New York's 75th Precinct, according to Hoodline's prior reporting. Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where the latest victim was treated, operates a Level II Trauma Center as part of the One Brooklyn Health network.
Under New York Penal Law § 120.05(2), intentionally injuring someone with a bladed weapon constitutes Assault in the Second Degree punishable by up to seven years in state prison, according to Saland Law. If a slashing causes serious physical injury or permanent facial disfigurement, prosecutors can pursue more serious assault charges. No arrests had been made as of Sunday night.
