An argument between two men riding a Pittsburgh bus spilled onto the street and ended with one of them stabbed once in the stomach in the city's Garfield neighborhood. Police were called to the 5000 block of Penn Avenue for the reported stabbing, and the suspect was arrested after resisting officers and getting hit with a Taser.
The two men had been arguing while riding the bus together, and that dispute turned into a physical altercation once they got off, according to CBS News. During that confrontation on Penn Avenue, the suspect stabbed the other man once in the stomach before bystanders stepped in to provide first aid while waiting for help to arrive.
Victim's Condition Updated
The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was later listed as stable but serious.
Officers canvassed the surrounding area for the suspect and identified him not far from the scene, on Baum Boulevard. When police attempted to take him into custody, the suspect resisted arrest, and an officer deployed a Taser to subdue him.
Suspect Evaluated, Headed to County Jail
Medics evaluated and cleared the suspect at the scene before he was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. He is expected to be transported to the Allegheny County Jail following that hospital evaluation. Pittsburgh Public Safety said charges against him are still forthcoming, with specifics not yet released.
Violent confrontations that begin as verbal disputes and escalate into stabbings have played out in other cities as well. In Portland, Oregon, a fight last month led to a stabbing in the Pearl District that left one person hurt, with a 23-year-old man arrested and booked into the Multnomah County jail on a second-degree assault charge, according to KPTV. In Loudoun County, Virginia, a 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with malicious wounding in a separate stabbing case, then transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, per Loudoun County officials.
Pittsburgh Public Safety has not released the suspect's identity, and the exact charges he will face remain unclear. As the investigation continues, police have not said whether the knife used in the stabbing has been recovered.
