A man is dead after his pickup truck lost control and struck a guardrail on the Story Avenue on-ramp to Interstate 64 westbound early Tuesday, marking another fatal single-vehicle crash on that same stretch of highway in recent weeks. The collision happened around 3:30 a.m. in Louisville's Butchertown neighborhood, near where the ramp splits toward Interstate 65.
Louisville Metro Police officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision near the Story Avenue on-ramp, according to The Courier-Journal. LMPD spokesperson Aaron Ellis said officers found that a man driving the pickup had lost control of the vehicle, which then collided with the guardrail on the ramp. Emergency medical services pronounced the man dead at the scene, and Louisville Fire also responded. No other vehicles were involved, per the same report, and the cause of the driver's loss of control remains unknown.
The LMPD Traffic Unit is leading the investigation, the outlet noted. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet completed a $13.2 million asphalt rehabilitation and guardrail replacement project along I-64 in Jefferson County, including general guardrail repairs and repaved exit ramps, according to 6AM City. Separately, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 5 began lane closures in June to install new solar lighting along I-64 in Louisville, aimed at improving nighttime visibility and combating copper wire theft along the corridor.
Officials have not said whether either project relates to this week's crash. What is required by law is a formal accounting: under Kentucky Revised Statute 189.635, investigating officers must file a complete written collision report with state authorities within 10 days of finishing their investigation, which will eventually detail contributing factors and any determination on speed.
