According to Mid Hudson News, the collision began when a driver heading west on Columbus Drive allegedly attempted to turn onto Main Street from the center lane. The collision involved a car that ended up in the storefront, causing the significant damage.

Street Closed Until Building Was Cleared Safe
The area remained closed to traffic until a City of Poughkeepsie building inspector determined it was safe to remove the vehicle from the Freeway Insurance storefront, per the same account. That inspection requirement kept a portion of Main Street and Columbus Drive shut down well after first responders arrived at 220 Main Street to begin clearing the wreck.
A separate Fishkill crash
According to the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, a separate crash on 1/10/19 in the Village of Fishkill involved a pickup that struck a stone wall and the building at 1140 Main Street after continuing through an intersection. A medical emergency was identified as a preliminary possible factor, and the driver was later pronounced dead.
As of publication, no additional details had been released about what led up to the alleged lane change or the condition of either driver.
Other local crashes have involved different circumstances
Recent reports also document two building strikes in Wappingers Falls. A vehicle hit the Tech Air/Airgas building on Route 9D in 2024, while a black sedan later crashed into Adams Fairacre Farms, according to wpdh.com. The Adams Fairacre Farms crash caused damage near the store entrance, and no serious injuries were reported at the time.
