A car plowed through the front window of Saltano's Pizzeria at the corner of Merrick Road and North Park Avenue in Rockville Centre on Wednesday morning, scattering bricks, wall debris and pizza boxes across the restaurant floor. The crash badly damaged the storefront of the popular pizzeria, which sits at 2 North Park Avenue serving New York-style, Grandma and specialty pies to local patrons.
The driver crashed into the pizzeria's large glass window around the intersection Wednesday morning, according to News 12 Long Island. The impact sent bricks and pieces of the wall flying into the dining area alongside boxes meant for customers' orders. News 12 reported that it reached out to the Rockville Centre Police Department for details on the crash but had not received a response as of publication.
Neighboring business owners told the outlet that collisions at this particular intersection happen nearly once a month, a claim that lines up with a documented pattern at the same corner. Less than four weeks earlier, a two-car collision at that exact junction knocked down a light pole and sent a vehicle onto the sidewalk in front of Saltano's, requiring medical treatment for three people at the scene, according to Herald Community Newspapers.
A Corner With a Long Crash History
The pattern predates this month. Earlier incidents place Wednesday's crash and last month's sidewalk incident in the same corridor.
The corner has also seen catastrophic incidents unrelated to routine fender-benders. In February 2022, a roughly 13,000-gallon gasoline tanker slammed into a La-Z-Boy store and caused a major fire near North Park, Lincoln Avenue and Merrick Road, per FOX 5 New York. That blaze destroyed a furniture store and drew more than 20 regional fire departments to the scene.
Why Storefronts Keep Taking the Hit
Rockville Centre's troubles echo a national trend. Vehicles crash into commercial buildings more than 100 times a day across the United States, according to the Storefront Safety Council. Low-speed crashes into storefronts are frequently tied to pedal misapplication, where a driver mistakenly hits the accelerator instead of the brake — a behavior that Virginia Tech research, as reported by Hoodline, found accounts for roughly 0.2% of all vehicle crashes nationwide and occurs in commercial or residential settings.
Physical barriers are one possible way to reduce this kind of damage.
State Highway Status Complicates Fixes
Any push to redesign the intersection would involve decisions about structural roadway changes, speed limits and signal timing along the corridor. Village trustees seeking a redesign of the North Park Avenue junction would need to consider those issues.

The crash adds to a summer of traffic anxiety in the village. In July, a 24-year-old pedestrian walking to work in Rockville Centre suffered a severe traumatic brain injury after being struck by a vehicle, spending three weeks in a coma and prompting a $150,000 community fundraiser for his neurorehabilitation, as Hoodline previously reported.
