Chance the Rapper is set to perform at Hard Rock Live in Wheatland on Monday, bringing his full-mixtape rendition of Coloring Book to the 2,500-seat venue north of Sacramento as part of a tour marking the project's 10th anniversary. The Chicago-born artist, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, will run through the entire 2016 mixtape alongside other songs from his catalog during the stop.
A Milestone Mixtape Returns to the Stage
Chance has scheduled a world tour built around the 10-year anniversary of Coloring Book, the mixtape that became a defining project in his career after its 2016 release. Speaking with CBS News Sacramento about the anniversary tour and the Sacramento-area show, Chance said he is bringing himself to Sacramento and that he has not performed in the area for a while. Coloring Book earned three Grammy Awards and featured guest turns from Kanye West, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz and Justin Bieber, and includes tracks like No Problem, Blessings and Same Drugs.
Elsewhere in the tour's rollout, Consequence reported the run spans 37 dates across the US and Canada, kicking off in Cleveland on August 11 and closing in Pittsburgh on October 11, with stops in Toronto, New York, Philadelphia, Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco, Denver, Minneapolis and St. Louis along the way. The outlet noted Chance will perform Coloring Book in full each night alongside other hits from his discography. It's a callback to 2023, when he played a handful of shows celebrating the 10th anniversary of his breakout mixtape, Acid Rap, per the same outlet.
Why Chance Says This Tour Feels Different
Chance told CBS News Sacramento that touring lets him reconnect with longtime fans and that live performances let him see the people who have actually experienced his music. He said returning to the songs after a decade of life experience gives the tour a different meaning, adding that the anniversary lets him and his fans revisit the music with the perspective of time. He also noted that some audience members at his shows may be seeing him perform for the first time, and said artists can spend all day with themselves before a show — but it's the crowd that changes the night.
He said he expects a magical night at the Sacramento-area show. General ticket sales for the tour began May 21 at 10 a.m. local time, according to TicketNews, which also traced Coloring Book's origins as the 2016 follow-up to Chance's breakout mixtape, Acid Rap.
Inside the Wheatland Venue
Hard Rock Live sits in Yuba County, roughly 35 miles north of Sacramento, and holds about 2,500 people, according to Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sacramento. Since opening in 2022, the venue has hosted 240 shows and served 430,000 attendees, per the same announcement. The Grammy-winning artist's stop there adds to a growing list of touring acts passing through the Yuba County room, which has quickly built a reputation as a mid-sized alternative to Sacramento's larger venues. Sacramento Theater notes that Chance was nominated for seven Grammy Awards in 2017, winning three of them, cementing Coloring Book's status as one of the most decorated mixtapes of that era.
