Hernando County Fire Rescue crews responded just after 4 p.m. yesterday to a traffic crash at the intersection of Mariner Boulevard and Portillo Road in Spring Hill, where a juvenile patient was hurt badly enough to require an air ambulance flight to a pediatric hospital. Crews set up a helicopter landing zone at a nearby church to carry out the evacuation.
According to Hernando County Fire Rescue, Med-Trans Florida was activated to assist with patient transport after the crash and ultimately flew the juvenile patient by air to a pediatric hospital. HCFR established the landing zone at the nearby church to accommodate the aircraft. Med-Trans Florida runs its regional air medical operation out of a flight base in Brooksville, keeping a Bell 407 critical care helicopter on 24-hour standby for medical evacuations across Central Florida, according to Global Medical Response. The program previously flew under the Bayflite 4 name before the 2021 rebrand.
Where Pediatric Trauma Patients Go From Hernando County
When juvenile trauma cases arise in Hernando County, ground crews typically coordinate with that Brooksville-based air base to reach specialized pediatric facilities in Tampa Bay. Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg operates a state-designated Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center serving 17 counties across West-Central Florida, per Johns Hopkins Medicine, and has been ranked the top children's hospital in Florida by U.S. News & World Report. St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Tampa also runs the Steinbrenner Emergency & Trauma Center, a state-certified Level II pediatric trauma facility that treats more than 45,000 pediatric patients annually, according to BayCare. It was not specified in the dossier which facility received Thursday's patient.
Hernando County Fire Rescue's Station 4 sits at 5083 Mariner Boulevard, positioning it as the primary local station along that corridor, according to Hernando County. Station 4 is one of 14 active fire stations the county operates. The Hernando County Metropolitan Planning Organization has separately designated the stretch of Mariner Boulevard, also known as County Road 587, between Spring Hill Drive and Northcliffe Boulevard as a priority corridor for operational monitoring and safety interventions, with plans targeting signal coordination and turning lane improvements.
A Corridor With a History of Serious Crashes
Thursday's crash is not the first serious collision at the Mariner Boulevard and Portillo Road intersection. In April 2023, a fatal two-vehicle collision involving a motorcycle occurred there after an SUV turned into the motorcycle's path, according to the Adventure Coast Journal. Local residents have cited the junction for turning hazards.
Mariner Boulevard has seen other severe incidents in recent months as well. On February 10, a vehicle crashed directly into a Walgreens building at Mariner Boulevard and County Line Road, causing injuries that required hospital transport, WTSP reported at the time, though the building itself sustained only minor cosmetic damage. Last week, four people, including two Hernando County Fire Rescue crew members, were hospitalized when an HCFR unit responding to a call with lights and sirens crashed at Cortez Boulevard and Barclay Avenue, according to FOX 13 Tampa Bay; all four sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Countywide Crash Numbers Underscore the Risk
Hernando County recorded 2,616 total traffic crashes and 44 traffic fatalities in 2024, keeping pace with a three-year average of 2,635 crashes annually, per the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Statewide, Florida crash totals exceeded 360,000 collisions in 2025. Under Florida Statute Section 316.065, drivers involved in collisions resulting in bodily injury, death, or vehicle damage severe enough to require towing must immediately notify law enforcement, though drivers in minor property-damage crashes under $500 may self-report online.
