A child was struck while crossing the street near Washington Park in Milwaukee on Friday afternoon. The driver was turning when the crash occurred, and the car ended up on a downed fence. The Milwaukee Fire Department transported one person to Children's Hospital following the crash, which happened at North 37th Street and West Lisbon Avenue.

According to WISN 12 News, police said the driver was turning when the crash occurred. WISN 12 News cameras captured footage showing the car resting on top of a fence that had been knocked down in the crash. WISN reported that the 7-year-old had serious injuries but was expected to survive.

A Familiar and Dangerous Stretch of Roadway

This is not the first serious crash reported near that same North 37th Street and West Lisbon Avenue intersection. In May 2023, a pedestrian was hit there and the driver continued westbound without stopping, according to tmj4.com. That victim, 32-year-old Ishatua Smail, was initially reported to have life-threatening injuries and was later reported dead, per fox6now.com.

Other Milwaukee-area crashes involving children crossing streets have drawn scrutiny in recent years. Three children were struck while crossing near 22nd Street and Center Street on Oct. 24, and one of them died while two others were seriously hurt, fox6now.com reported. Police said that crash happened around 5:30 p.m. after a driver disregarded a red light.

West Allis Crash Renews Neighborhood Concerns

Just this past Friday evening, a separate crash injured a 4-year-old boy who was crossing a street in West Allis with his mother near South 69th Street and West National Avenue, according to tmj4.com's report on that incident. West Allis police said the crash happened around 6:50 p.m. when a westbound vehicle passed other cars on the right that had stopped for pedestrians in a crosswalk.

That child was recovering at home afterward. There were no broken bones, but there was some road rash on his leg and arm, along with some bruising and scrapes on his face, per the outlet's report. Neighbors along National Avenue said the crash renewed concerns about speeding and reckless driving in the area, the same account notes.
