Chiptune pioneers Anamanaguchi will bring their 8-bit-meets-guitar-rock sound to Tampa next Tuesday, headlining a show at Coppertail Brewing Co. with California math-rock trio Covet and Virginia trio Drook opening. Tickets remain available starting at $34.55.
The New York band built its reputation by literally hacking vintage 1980s Nintendo Entertainment System consoles and Game Boy hardware, running tracker software to generate 8-bit digital synthesis that gets layered over live electric guitar, bass, and drums, according to AllMusic. As reported by Creative Loafing Tampa, the band formed in 2004 and has built an extensive touring career.
Anamanaguchi's fourth studio album, *Anyway*, was released August 8, 2025 via Polyvinyl Records. The Creative Loafing Tampa report notes the band used *Anyway* to explore a new indie-rock direction, and per Discogs, the project was produced, recorded, and mixed by Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York — a notable departure from the band's earlier, more purely synth-driven work.
A Franchise Built on Scott Pilgrim
The band's chiptune credentials run deeper than any one album. In March 2026, Anamanaguchi released a 71-song original soundtrack for the video game *Scott Pilgrim EX*, marking their third major score tied to the *Scott Pilgrim* franchise following the 2010 game and the 2023 Netflix animated series, according to Polyvinyl Records. The 2013 sophomore album *Endless Fantasy* debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and No. 2 on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart, fueled by $277,399 raised from 7,253 backers in Anamanaguchi's second-most-successful music project funded on Kickstarter at the time, per Wikipedia.
Math-Rock and Indie Rock Round Out the Bill
Opener Covet is a California math-rock band fronted by finger-picking and tapping guitarist Yvette Young, whose lineup includes bassist Brandon Dove and drummer Jessica Burdeaux, according to Noizze UK. The trio's most recent full-length, *Catharsis*, arrived in April 2023 via Triple Crown Records as an eight-track concept album built around fantasy characters and themes, incorporating shoegaze textures and rare vocal tracks, as detailed by FLOOD Magazine.
Also on the bill is Drook, a Virginia trio touring behind its 2024 album *The Pure Joy of Jumping*. The coming-of-age project is the band's record, according to Ground Control Touring.
Ybor City's Music Scene Leans on Breweries
The venue itself is a Tampa brewery. Coppertail Brewing Co. is hosting the show.
The show is co-promoted by local independent organizers Montgomery Drive and Florida Maverick Artist Management, part of a broader shift in how national touring acts are landing in Tampa. WUSF Public Media reports that Crowbar owner Tom DeGeorge took over as Event Director at Coppertail Brewing Co. to expand the brewery's live concert programming. This show brings a national chiptune act to a Tampa brewery.
