Soprano Christine Goerke has launched a new vocal arts organization called VOX Detroit, aiming to build professional opportunities for singers, actors, poets and other performers across the metro Detroit area. The group will present everything from opera and cabaret to musical theater and spoken word, and it already has an event on the calendar for the coming months.
Goerke has continued to call Detroit home.
Goerke's move into founding her own organization follows a broader shift in her career away from full-time opera administration. In June 2024 she stepped down from her position as Associate Artistic Director at Detroit Opera, transitioning into an artistic consultant role while keeping her home base in the region, according to OperaWire.
Beyond the Aria Comes to the Gem Theatre
VOX Detroit's first announced event, Beyond the Aria, is scheduled for April 18, 2027, at the Gem Theatre. The show blends music and storytelling.
Beyond the Aria has also featured Goerke and Terry. In October 2025, Terry and Goerke brought the series to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, pairing professional stars with conservatory students, according to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
The Gem Theatre itself carries its own bit of local lore. The 1927 Spanish Revival building, originally opened as the Little Theatre, was physically moved 1,850 feet in 1997 to clear space for Comerica Park — a relocation that set a Guinness World Record as the heaviest building ever moved on wheels, at 5.5 million pounds, according to the Detroit Historical Society.
A Pagliacci Co-Production With Music Hall
VOX Detroit is also working with Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts to co-produce Ruggero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, the second installment of Music Hall's Classic Opera Series, per the Free Press. The series launched in February 2026 with a concert performance of Puccini's Turandot featuring Goerke and the Detroit Youth Choir, according to Music Hall Detroit. Pagliacci tells the story of a traveling theatrical troupe caught in a love triangle, building toward a performance that ends in murder.
The Pagliacci cast includes Errin Duane Brooks, Maria Natale, Paulo Szot, Jacob Surzyn and Leo Williams, with the Detroit Youth Choir joining the production. Conducting will fall to Suzanne Acton, who has served as assistant music director and chorus master for Detroit Opera since 1986 and also leads Detroit's Rackham Symphony Choir, according to ClickOnDetroit. Music Hall's Vince Paul called his venue Detroit's people's theater and said the partnership with VOX Detroit is intended to grow for years, per the Free Press report.
Building the Infrastructure Behind the Scenes
James Matthew Daniel earned a regional Emmy for his work as co-director, editor and director of photography on a televised capture of The Nutcracker with Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, according to the Lake Highlands Advocate. Matthew Principe, a former producer of The Met: Live in HD, joined the project.
Principe framed VOX Detroit's early work in structural terms, saying the organization is building infrastructure for connection, according to the Free Press.
