Churchill Downs stewards stopped Saturday night’s second race and recorded it as a no contest after six horses and riders fell in a spill. The incident produced an approximately 30-minute delay, and Cristian Torres, Walter Rodriguez and Martin Garcia were taken to Louisville hospitals for evaluation, according to Thoroughbred Daily News and the Charlotte Observer.

Keith Asmussen was stood down from his remaining mounts Saturday night. Francisco Arrieta also did not ride in Race 3, while Axel Concepcion returned to competition in that race, Thoroughbred Daily News reported.
Horse dispositions
The horses involved were identified as Lutkenhaus, Ritornello, Shacklebolt, Steve Wood, Industrious and Midnight Rumble. Their riders were, respectively, Torres, Arrieta, Rodriguez, Garcia, Asmussen and Concepcion. Lutkenhaus, Shacklebolt and Industrious left the track in an equine ambulance; Midnight Rumble walked away from the scene, according to Thoroughbred Daily News and the Charlotte Observer.
How the incident fits broader safety data
National safety figures offer scale but cannot determine the severity of Saturday’s injuries or explain the cause of the spill. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority reported that 47 racetracks operating under its programs recorded 0.90 racing-related horse fatalities per 1,000 starts in 2024. It also reported 181 training-related deaths at tracks operating under its rules and affiliated training facilities, or 0.50 deaths per 1,000 workouts. Those national horse-fatality measures are not a comparable rider-injury rate and do not establish the condition of the horses or jockeys involved here.
The spill occurred in a maiden special weight for 2-year-old Thoroughbreds during the second race of Churchill Downs’ Downs After Dark program. The 10-horse field was scheduled to cover six and a half furlongs on dirt, according to Thoroughbred Daily News.
