Cleveland is starting Friday near 70 degrees under partly cloudy skies, but the calm morning will not last. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more likely by late morning.
The National Weather Service in Cleveland says storms could affect the area from roughly 10 a.m. through 3 p.m., with temperatures in the upper 70s to lower 80s over the holiday weekend. No watches or warnings are in effect, but damaging wind gusts are the main severe-weather concern across parts of northern Ohio.
Storms Could Disrupt Friday Plans
Thunderstorms are most likely around late morning and midday, when the chance of rain rises to about 80%. Rainfall could be heavy, and isolated large hail cannot be ruled out in the broader region.
The strongest severe-weather setup is expected to be displaced southwest of Cleveland, leaving far Northeast Ohio closer to the edge of the threat. Even so, outdoor plans and the afternoon commute could run into sudden downpours, gusty winds and reduced visibility.
According to the City of Cleveland's Division of Water Pollution Control, the department oversees the wastewater and stormwater collection systems and works to minimize or eliminate potential street and basement flooding.
Weekend Weather Calms Down
Friday night brings another chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low near 69 degrees. Saturday may begin with a shower or rumble of thunder before turning mostly sunny and cooler, with a high near 79.
Sunday looks like the weekend standout: mostly sunny, with a high around 77 degrees. The holiday weekend should remain seasonable and mainly dry.
Summer Heat Returns Midweek
Tuesday is expected to be partly sunny with a high near 81, but the pattern turns more unsettled again by Wednesday. A chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Wednesday, followed by another storm chance Thursday.
