New York City is waking Sunday under cloudy skies and a lingering chance of brief showers, with temperatures around 68 degrees early. The city should stay noticeably cooler than recent days, topping out near 74 before skies brighten into the afternoon.
Showers Fade Before A Brighter Afternoon
Rain chances are expected to rise to about 60% between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.; isolated to widely scattered showers remain possible much of the day and cannot be ruled out in the afternoon. Most neighborhoods should remain dry. Northeast winds around 8 mph will keep the day feeling cooler, while more clouds than sun are expected for much of Sunday, although conditions may vary, according to the National Weather Service.
Outside the city, isolated minor tidal flooding is possible Sunday afternoon along vulnerable south-shore back bays in Southern Nassau County. No flooding is expected across the forecast area Monday, and no watches, warnings or advisories are in effect for New York City.
Labor Day Looks Like The Better Outdoor Bet
Labor Day on Monday looks sunny and dry, with a high near 78 degrees and northwest winds around 7 mph. Monday night will be mostly clear, with temperatures dipping to around 64.
The latest outlook is a modest but meaningful adjustment from Hoodline’s earlier weekend forecast. That version had Sunday closer to 77 degrees, while the current forecast calls for 74 and keeps a small shower chance in play before 2 p.m.
Warmth Returns Before A Thursday Front
Tuesday should be sunny near 80, followed by a mostly sunny Wednesday near 83. Southwest winds strengthen Wednesday night, and a cold front could bring the next widespread chance for rain Thursday, when the high may reach 85.
Thursday’s rain chance is currently slight, but heavier rainfall is possible as the front approaches. Cooler, mostly sunny weather returns Friday, with a high near 77, while Saturday should be sunny and near 78.
For Sunday plans, a light layer and a backup for a brief shower should do the job. Monday looks like the cleaner bet for parks, barbecues and long walks across the city.
