A man was killed on the eastbound 91 Freeway in Corona after he stepped out of his disabled Dodge Ram 1500 and into a live traffic lane, where he was struck by one car and then run over by another. The California Highway Patrol said the driver had gotten out of his truck after it became disabled in the FasTrak lanes, only to be hit moments later by passing vehicles.
According to KTLA, the Dodge Ram 1500 became disabled in the No. 2 lane of the FasTrak lanes on the eastbound 91 Freeway just east of Interstate 15. The adult male driver got out of the truck and then ran into the No. 1 lane of the main freeway lanes, putting him directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
A Honda HR-V struck the man first, and a Honda Civic then ran over him after the initial collision, per the same report. The CHP Riverside Area station received the call at 10:28 p.m. about a stalled vehicle blocking eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway near Corona, setting off the chain of events that followed.
No Intoxication or Prosecution Suspected, CHP Says
All parties involved in the crash remained at the scene afterward, and a CHP spokesperson said driver intoxication was not suspected in the collision. The same spokesperson said that no prosecution was suspected at that time, according to the station's report.
The stretch of the 91 Freeway where the crash happened has seen other deadly incidents involving disabled vehicles and people caught in live lanes. In February 2025, three adults in a disabled pickup truck were killed when a tractor-trailer struck their vehicle on the 91 Freeway in Buena Park, according to the Los Angeles Times. That pickup truck had already stopped on the freeway following an earlier collision when it was hit shortly before 4 a.m. near Valley View Street during rainy conditions, the newspaper reported, and the tractor-trailer driver remained at the scene afterward.
A Pattern of Freeway Deaths Involving Stalled Vehicles
A similar tragedy played out on the westbound Riverside Freeway in Yorba Linda, where a man was killed while trying to fix his own disabled vehicle, according to Patch. That crash happened at 12:10 a.m. just east of Gypsum Canyon Road, and CHP shut down all westbound lanes except the HOV lanes at 12:37 a.m. to investigate. The driver who struck the man was not injured and stayed at the scene, with no immediate arrests reported.
In the Corona case, the exact circumstances that led the man to leave his truck and run into an active lane of traffic have not been detailed beyond the sequence CHP described to reporters. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
