Washington, D.C., is waking up Sunday under cloudy skies with lingering showers, but the wet start should be brief before sunshine breaks through and temperatures climb to 87 degrees. Reagan National Airport reported temperatures around 73 degrees early Sunday, with muggy conditions still hanging around the city.
Showers Exit By Midmorning
Lingering rain should taper by around 9 a.m., with partly sunny skies taking over for the rest of the day. The National Weather Service says rainfall totals could reach generally 0.25 to 0.50 inches over the area, locally approaching an inch, while the risk of thunderstorms remains low.
Sunday afternoon will turn noticeably brighter and hotter, with weak west to northwest winds. The air will remain humid, but conditions should be much more favorable for outdoor plans once the morning showers move out.
Monday Brings A Sharp Cooldown
Sunday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 70 degrees, followed by a sunny Monday with a high around 81. Post-frontal northwesterly winds will increase Monday, with afternoon gusts around 20 to 25 mph.
The bigger change arrives Monday night, when overnight lows fall into the upper 40s to 50s under mostly clear skies. Tuesday will stay sunny with another high near 81, and humidity will ease considerably compared with the sticky start to Sunday.
Heat Returns By Midweek
Sunny weather continues Wednesday and Thursday with a midweek warmup. Friday will begin mostly sunny and warm near 87 degrees, though rain showers could develop after 2 p.m.
Showers may occur along a cold front next weekend. No watches, warnings or advisories are in effect for Washington, D.C., but Monday’s gustier winds could make the cooler air feel more pronounced around exposed areas.
