Death Cab for Cutie is heading back to Austin. The indie rock veterans have announced a 2027 North American tour behind their new album I Built You A Tower, with a stop penciled in for March 23, 2027 — though exactly where in the city remains a mystery for now.
The band unveiled the tour dates this week, and Austin's listing on the itinerary simply reads TBA where a venue name should be, according to BroadwayWorld. The band's own newsletter confirms that all tickets, including for Austin, will go on sale at a date still to be determined later this year, according to a post on the band's Substack. Presale windows for the broader tour are locked in, though: the artist presale opens Wednesday at 10 a.m. local time, followed by a local presale Thursday at 10 a.m., with general public sales beginning Friday at 10 a.m., per BroadwayWorld.
Australian indie band Swapmeet, whose career dates back to 2022, will support the tour and is confirmed for all three Texas stops, according to the seed reporting from Austin CultureMap. The Texas run also includes Houston on March 22 and Dallas on March 24, sandwiching the Austin date, per the same report.
A Long-Awaited Return to Independent Roots
The tour supports I Built You A Tower, Death Cab for Cutie's eleventh studio album, which arrived June 5. The record marks the band's return to its independent roots after 20 years on Atlantic Records, according to BroadwayWorld, with the band re-establishing those indie credentials through label ANTI-. It's a notable full-circle moment for a group whose 2003 album Transatlanticism is often described as its last truly independent release before major-label years, per Austin CultureMap's reporting.
Formed in 1997, Death Cab for Cutie — currently made up of Benjamin Gibbard, Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper and Zac Rae — was at the forefront of indie rock as the genre emerged, becoming known for introspective, poetic songwriting, according to CultureMap. The band has racked up eight Grammy nominations across its career, and the new album's single “Riptides” recently became the band's ninth number-one hit at Adult Alternative radio, per BroadwayWorld.
Cross-Country Route Includes Two-Night Stands
The spring leg opens with a January 19 show in Honolulu before the main run kicks off in Nashville on March 11, according to Jambase. From there the band works through Knoxville on March 12, St. Augustine on March 17, Miami Beach on March 18, and Orlando on March 20, before Texas and a swing through New Orleans on March 26 and Huntsville, Alabama, on March 27.
Jambase notes the itinerary features two-night stands in cities including Atlanta, where the band plays The Eastern on March 14 and 15, and Boston, where it hits MGM Music Hall at Fenway on April 7 and 8. The tour also stops in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Montreal, Uncasville and New York's Radio City Music Hall before wrapping at Asheville's ExploreAsheville.com Arena on April 16, per Jambase's account. Beyond North America, the band says it has UK, Europe, Japan and Australia legs planned, with the band noting it heads to Japan and Australia later this year, according to its Substack post.
New Video Accompanies the Announcement
Alongside the tour news, the band released a new animated video for the album track “Stone Over Water,” created by musician and animator Sean Solomon, per the band's Substack. Solomon has said he found the song incredibly personal to work on, and that the finished video ultimately carries a positive message despite its melancholy tone, according to CultureMap's reporting.
For now, Austin fans have a date circled on the calendar but no venue and no local ticket-release timeline to plan around — details the band says will come later this year. Until then, the presale windows opening this week remain the only concrete way in for those hoping to catch the show wherever it ultimately lands.
