A Volusia County sheriff’s deputy entered a marina’s dark water to reach a 72-year-old man who had fallen from his wheelchair, FOX 35 Orlando reported. The account establishes the fall and the deputy’s rescue, but does not say what led to the fall or describe the man’s condition afterward.
Water emergencies vary by setting
Volusia County says its Fire Rescue Technical Rescue Team trains in swiftwater and flood rescue, among other specialties. The county’s description does not say that team responded to the marina incident, and it does not identify the resources involved in this rescue.
Other Volusia County cases show how different water emergencies can be. In an Aug. 7, 2024, account, the Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Brough entered a pond in Deltona and carried a missing 5-year-old boy to shore. In a separate New Smyrna Beach incident described in a June 6, 2026, post, the office said Deputy Gourley pulled a 68-year-old woman from the ocean and deputies revived her with CPR. Those events differed in location and circumstances from the marina fall.
The examples illustrate distinct calls, not how often such incidents occur; they also do not establish that the same units or procedures applied in the marina rescue. The marina’s exact location, the circumstances of the fall and the man’s condition remain unreported in the available account.
