A vehicle fire erupted just before 12:55 p.m. Monday in the 17400 block of Ben-Mar Drive near 18th Avenue and Little Morongo in Desert Hot Springs, quickly spreading to nearby RVs and a structure. The blaze killed a dog and left one person hospitalized with what were described as minor injuries before firefighters brought it under control roughly one hour later.
Authorities said the fire began in a single vehicle before jumping to additional vehicles and a structure on the property, according to KESQ. By the time crews arrived, the flames had consumed three RVs. The injured person was treated for minor injuries and transported to the hospital, while animal control was called to the scene to assist with the deceased dog, the station reported.
CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the scene at 12:54 p.m. under the incident designation #BenIC, according to Palm Desert Patch. Crews arriving on scene found a vehicle fully involved in flames that had already begun spreading to the RVs and the nearby structure, prompting mutual aid calls to Cathedral City and Palm Springs.
Nine Engines, Two Hours to Contain the Flames
Nine fire engines in total responded to the Ben-Mar Drive scene, including a unit from the Palm Springs Fire Department, per MyNewsLA.com. Firefighters achieved containment at 1:45 p.m. Monday. Fire officials reported no immediate cause for the blaze, and it remains unclear whether the RVs were occupied residences or stored units, as well as the precise condition of the person taken to the hospital.
Desert Hot Springs relies on a cooperative contract with CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department for municipal fire protection, a partnership that expanded earlier this year with the opening of Fire Station 98 to relieve heavy call volume at Station 37 on Pierson Boulevard, according to the City of Desert Hot Springs. That added capacity comes as the desert city continues to see rapid population growth strain its emergency response network.
A Pattern of Fast-Moving Fires in Desert Hot Springs
Monday's fire is the latest in a string of destructive blazes in the city this year. Hoodline previously reported that a second-alarm fire on Palm Drive involved two mobile homes and threatened surrounding vegetation on August 4, requiring assistance from Palm Springs and Cathedral City crews. In July 2023, a second-alarm fire at the Country Squire Mobile Home Park on Dillon Road ultimately destroyed nine mobile homes and triggered evacuations due to a nearby 500-gallon propane tank, per CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department records tied to a local Facebook post.
The Ben-Mar Drive corridor itself has seen prior emergency activity. In March 2025, CAL FIRE and municipal crews fought a second-alarm pallet yard fire near Ben-Mar Drive and Dillon Road that burned roughly one acre and forced temporary closures of Dillon Road, according to footage shared by NBC Palm Springs. Dillon Road, which connects directly to Ben-Mar Drive, also suffered extensive storm washouts during Tropical Storm Hilary in 2023 that led to an estimated $7 million in repairs and a city state of emergency, as reported by The Riverside Record.
