Detroit's creator scene is getting a four-day showcase this weekend, with panels, a photo shoot and a cookout designed to turn social media followings into paying businesses. Detroit Creator Weekend runs Sept. 24–27 at venues throughout Detroit, with The Creator Summit hosted at Bamboo Detroit's newly renovated Jefferson Hub in Midtown, and organizers say the goal is nothing less than positioning the city as a serious player in a global industry now worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

The event is the brainchild of Amber M. Lewis, founder of the creative agency Social N The City, according to The Michigan Chronicle. Lewis previously served as the digital and social media director for the City of Detroit and was named a Detroit brand ambassador for Bumble in June 2019 after organizing a sold-out networking event for local female creatives, according to Metro Times. That civic and entrepreneurial background shapes the weekend's central pitch: shifting Detroit's creators, in Lewis's words, “from a community to an industry,” per the same Michigan Chronicle account.

Social N The City has already built a community of more than 700 Detroit-area creators, and the Chronicle reports that Lewis believes Detroit has never needed permission to influence the world. The summit brings together creators, brands, agencies, platforms and cultural leaders to explore both the creative and business sides of building an industry career, with tactical workshops following the panel conversations, per the outlet's reporting.

A Storytelling Panel Stacked With Detroit Talent

One summit panel, The Art of Telling Detroit's Story, features filmmaker and actress Diarra Kilpatrick alongside independent producer Dennis L. Reed II. Kilpatrick created, wrote and starred in the dark comedy mystery series Diarra from Detroit, which debuted on BET+ in March 2024 and premiered its second season on Paramount+ in July, according to a project overview from Paramount+. Reed, for his part, has produced more than 40 film and television projects, according to Beautiful + Machine Magazine.

A second panel, Building a Career Off of Your Creativity, features Erin Winters of Erin On Demand alongside Rick and Yolanda Williams of Distinct Life, per the Michigan Chronicle. A third session, focused on positioning a personal brand for partnerships, brings together Lewis, Cederick Campbell and Jessica Nabongo. Nabongo, a Detroit native, became the first documented Black woman to travel to all 195 UN-recognized countries when she completed her world journey in October 2019, later publishing her memoir through National Geographic in 2022, according to DBusiness.

From Photo Shoots to a Belle Isle Cookout

Beyond the panels, Lewis is partnering with Design Core, Shumake Studios and Detroit Fit Checks for a Detroit Creator Shoot, and the Belle Isle Conservancy is collaborating with Detroit DAR to host a creator cookout, the Michigan Chronicle reports. Organizers describe the overall goal as building an ecosystem connecting Detroit creators with resources, relationships and opportunities, aiming to make the city a power player in the global creator economy. Ticket and programming details are available at detroitcreatorweekend.com, per the same report.

The timing places Detroit Creator Weekend inside the 16th annual Detroit Month of Design, a citywide festival organized by Design Core Detroit that features more than 100 events this September under the theme “Design Moves the Future,” according to the University of Michigan's Stamps School of Art & Design. Detroit became the first and remains the only city in the United States designated a UNESCO City of Design, a distinction it received in December 2015 for its legacy in industrial design, architecture and creative economics, as noted by PIN-UP Magazine.

A Bigger Space to Match a Bigger Ambition

The summit's host venue reflects that same expansion in scale. Bamboo Detroit is growing its coworking footprint this year into Midtown's Jefferson Hub, a renovated 115,000-square-foot former school at 950 Selden St. featuring an 85-seat event center and coworking space, according to Bamboo Coworking Detroit. The Michigan Chronicle reports the global creator economy is currently estimated at $310 billion, with roughly 200 million people worldwide identifying as creators — figures that echo a broader industry trajectory. Goldman Sachs Research projected in an April 2023 report that the global creator economy could nearly double from $250 billion in 2023 to $480 billion by 2027, driven largely by brand deals, short-form video and influencer marketing.

That growth has also attracted heavier corporate interest. A Digiday report from August 2025 found that merger and acquisition transactions in the creator economy surged 73% year-over-year in the first half of 2025, as corporate holding companies and private equity firms acquired influencer marketing platforms and talent agencies. It's the kind of consolidation Lewis is explicitly trying to get ahead of locally — pushing Detroit's creators past informal social networking and into the formal partnerships, education and industry relationships that the Michigan Chronicle reports Detroit Creator Weekend is designed to build.
